Military Dependents Checklist

Military Dependents, in order to get your benefits applied by the Military and Post-Traditional Student Services:

Federal Benefits

If you have not applied for your benefit...

  • Go to https://www.va.gov 
  • Click on Education - Apply for education benefits
  • Scroll down and click on the green "Find your education benefits form"
  • Answer the questions, which should take you to the correct application
  • Once completed, make sure to print the Confirmation Page

If you have used the benefit in the past and need to transfer it to JSU...

  • Go to https://www.va.gov
  • Click on Education - Change your current education benefit
  • You will need to fill out a Request of Change of Program or Place of Training. We recommend you submit this form online to the VA
  • Once completed, make sure to print the Confirmation Page

Required Documents

The following documents must be uploaded on the JSU Military and Post-Traditional website:

  • Certificate of Eligibility
    • Only Students Using Chapter 35 (DEA)
      • Must include the Veteran's Social Security or Case number. The number must match the number under the Veteran's name on the letter.
    • Only Students Using Chapter 33 (Transfer of Entitlement Post 9/11 GI Bill)
      • Monthly Enrollment Verification (Student must do this the last day of every month) Call 888-442-4451 to enroll.
  • For a Change of Major - you must complete a Change of Program form.

State Benefit

If you have not applied for the Scholarship, go to the nearest State VA Office:

If you have used this benefit at another school and need to transfer it to JSU:

Required Documents

The following documents need to be filled out online at www.jsu.edu/post-trad/ (We already have a copy of your State Certificate so there is no need to upload one.)

  • FERPA Release Form (It is an electronic copy of the form you were given at the VA office)
  • FAFSA - Per the State of Alabama, you must fill out, complete, and be eligible to use FAFSA (Free Application for Student Financial Aid) for your benefits to be processed and applied.
    • High school students doing dual enrollment, you still have to apply for FAFSA even if it will get denied. 
    • If you need to check to see if you need any additional documents to complete the FAFSA, go to your MyJaxState portal and/or check your JSU email.
