Scholarships

students perform once upon a mattress on stage

Thank you for your interest in JSU Theatre and Film scholarships.  Each year we award thousands of dollars in scholarships to our talented, hard-working students. Scholarships are awarded through an audition and/or portfolio review process.  All students also participate in interviews with the faculty.

Scholarships are only available for students with a major in Theatre or Film.

Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year will open October 1.

Scholarship Application

Once you are on the scholarship page, Click Competitive Scholarships and then search either Theatre or Film for the link to the application.  We also administer the Jan Rhodes, Larry Miles, and Robert Thompson memorial scholarships.

What to prepare

For all scholarships you will prepare a resume of theatre or film related experience to upload for the application, please submit as a pdf. Any video materials for virtual auditions should be submitted as links to either YouTube or Vimeo.

If you have questions about any aspect of the audition process or what materials to prepare, please don't be shy!  Email us at theatrefilm@jsu.edu with any questions at all.  Remember, we are rooting for you to succeed.

Students interested in the Performance concentration should prepare the following for their audition:

  • A current resume of theatrical and related experience
  • A one-minute comic monologue
  • A one-minute serious monologue
  • OPTIONAL: a one minute song

Performance majors may choose to submit their material virtually or attend in person auditions. If you choose to audition virtually, you must submit your audition materials via a YouTube or Vimeo link with your application.

Students applying for Theatre scholarships virtually will also participate in online interviews with the faculty. We will contact you to set up appointments for the interviews.

Students interested in pursuing the Production concentration should prepare the following:

  • A current resume of theatrical and related experience (pdf format)
  • A portfolio of technical and design work for theatre which may include other artwork that is relevant

If you choose to submit all materials online instead of attending portfolio reviews in person, you will need to present your portfolio in video form via a YouTube or Vimeo link submitted with your application.  Submissions should be 3-5 minutes.

Students applying for Theatre scholarships virtually will also participate in online interviews with the faculty. We will contact you to set up appointments for the interviews.

If you need assistance in determining what to bring for your portfolio, don't hesitate to contact us using the Request Info form below.

Students majoring in Film should prepare the following to upload with your scholarship application:

  • A current resume of film and related experience
  • A three-minute original short film (either YouTube or Vimeo link) or a three page original short film script.

Students applying for Film scholarships will also participate in virtual interviews with the faculty. We will contact you to set up appointments for the interviews.
