Upcoming Auditions
Auditions
Oklahoma! by Rodgers and Hammerstein
This Spring semester, Jacksonville State University will be performing the classic American musical Oklahoma! Rehearsals will begin this January and the performances will take place on the last weekend of February and the first weekend of March.
Auditions will take place in mid-November over three specific days. These auditions are completely open: anyone in the JSU community—faculty, staff, or student (regardless of major)—is welcome to audition. Furthermore, anyone in the surrounding community is also welcome to audition.
Please read the following important information carefully to best prepare for the audition as well as when to attend auditions:
There will be three different types of auditions on three different evenings.
- DANCE - Tuesday, November 17th at 6:00 pm
- ACTING - Wednesday, November 18th at 6:00 pm
- MUSIC - Thursday, November 19th at 6:00 pm
All three auditions will be held at the Stone Center Ward Theater on the JSU campus. Auditioners are encouraged to arrive at the Ward Theater lobby to check in and fill out audition forms well before the auditions start at 6:00.
If you want to be considered for ANY SPEAKING ROLE in the show, big or small, you must attend all three evenings of auditions.
If you want to solely be considered as a DANCER for the chorus of dancers—including featured dancers—you must attend the entire dance audition on the 17th. You are not required to attend the other two auditions.
If you want to solely be considered as a SINGER for the chorus of vocalists, you must attend the entire music audition on the 19th. You are not required to attend the other two auditions.
If you would like to be considered as both a DANCE and a SINGER (but not have a speaking role), you are welcome to come to both auditions on the 17th and the 19th.
If you attend the DANCE AUDITION on the 17th, come dressed ready to move, all in black if possible. If you have jazz or ballet shoes, feel free to bring them as well.
If you attend the ACTING AUDITION on the 18th, please prepare a one-minute contemporary monologue, preferably in the style of Oklahoma! Note that there will likely be cold-read “callbacks” directly after the monologues for certain auditioners.
If you attend the MUSIC AUDITION on the 19th, please prepare 32 bars of music in the style of Rodgers and Hammerstein in the original key. Make sure to bring sheet music for an accompanist (that will be provided.) Also make sure the cut markings are clear in the score.
