Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece
Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece – Led by Dr. Maureen McGuire and Dr. Lindsay Holman
Program Dates: May 15th – May 25th, 2026
Students will explore archaeology, architecture, art, history, and visual and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome. Major attention will be given to the social, political, economic, and spiritual contexts of the period. Topics will include the influence of attitudes towards life, death, spirituality, gender, and cultural identity on the archaeology, architecture, art, history, and visual and material culture of the period. Students will learn to distinguish the past from our very different present, while recognizing the impact of varying interpretations of the past on our present by being introduced, firsthand, to the archaeology, architecture, art, history, and visual and material culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans on a ten-day study abroad program to sites in Italy and Greece. Throughout the trip, students will gather and contextualize historical information in order to interpret both the particularity of past lives and the scale of human experience by visiting the locations and monuments studied resulting in their clearer understanding along with experiencing their spatial nuances.
