Dr. Amanda Southwell is an Assistant Professor in the College of Health Professionals and Wellness at Jacksonville State University. She began her academic journey at Central Alabama Community College, where she earned an Associate in Science degree and an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing. She later became a three-time graduate of Jacksonville State University, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees. She is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years of healthcare experience.
Dr. Southwell primarily teaches in the Family Nurse Practitioner program and also serves as a chair for Doctor of Nursing Practice students. In addition to her academic role, she maintains an active faculty practice in inpatient diabetes management, allowing her to remain engaged in current clinical practice while educating future advanced practice nurses. Her clinical background includes extensive experience in emergency nursing, as well as intensive care, home health, hospice and palliative care, urgent care, and inpatient diabetes management. Dr. Southwell is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), Central Alabama Nurse Practitioner Association, Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Zeta Xi Chapter.

She has been married to her husband, Daniel, for six years, and together they have a blended family of four children: Madilynn, Kimber, Raelynn, and Dax. Outside of her professional and academic roles, she enjoys traveling, cooking, spending time with her family, and cheering on her three daughters at volleyball games. She also enjoys giving back to her community by volunteering at her local recreation center, where she assists with coaching young girls in volleyball.
