Jacksonville State University’s Dr. Arup Ghosh Elected Chair of IEEE Alabama Section for 2025-2026

Dr. Arup Ghosh, an associate professor of computer science at Jacksonville State University (Jax State) and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has been elected Chair of the IEEE Alabama Section for 2025-2026. A respected leader in technology and education, Dr. Ghosh's appointment reflects his outstanding contributions to the IEEE community and his commitment to fostering innovation and professional growth across Alabama. 

"As Chair, I aim to build upon the strong foundation of the IEEE Alabama Section to further support our members and student branches across the state," Dr. Ghosh shared. "I want to inspire more individuals to engage with IEEE and contribute to the advancements in technology, society, and education." 

IEEE boasts a membership of over 460,000 individuals across 190 countries. The IEEE Alabama Section serves members throughout the state, including student branches at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Auburn University and Jax State. 

Dr. Ghosh's leadership has been recognized with two prestigious awards for his contributions to education: the Engineering Council of Birmingham (ECOB) Educator of the Year Award and the IEEE Alabama Educator of the Year Award.  

"It is humbling to receive these awards, which are a testament to the incredible support I've received from colleagues, students, and the IEEE community," Dr. Ghosh said of these honors. "My passion has always been to nurture the next generation of engineers and researchers, and these recognitions motivate me to continue that work." 

Dr. Ghosh holds several key positions within IEEE. He is Chair of the IEEE Alabama Computer Society, the IEEE Region 3 Technical Activities Coordinator and a member of the IEEE Region 3 Operational Audit Committee. His distinguished history of service includes active involvement in technical activities, program planning, and participation as a reviewer and technical committee member within IEEE Region 3 and on a broader scale. 

At Jax State, Dr. Ghosh spearheaded the establishment of the IEEE Student Branch in 2023, which has thrived under his guidance. The branch earned the IEEE Region 3 Exemplary Student Branch Award for its outstanding leadership, management, and administration. "The students at Jax State have shown exceptional dedication and creativity," Dr. Ghosh noted. "Their enthusiasm for learning and innovating inspires me every day, and it's a privilege to mentor them as they explore the endless possibilities in engineering and technology." 

Through his mentorship, Dr. Ghosh's students have achieved significant milestones, including winning the Entrepreneur Pitch Competition at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Undergraduate Research Presentation Award at IEEE SoutheastCon, and the Best of Showcase and Best of Science and Mathematics Graduate awards at the Jax State Student Symposium. 

In addition to his IEEE contributions, Dr. Ghosh revitalized JSU's UPE Honor Society for Computing and Information Disciplines and actively contributed to academic competitions, including the IEEE Xtreme programming competition and the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for Alabama's 3rd Congressional District. 

Dr. Ghosh's Human-Technology Interaction Research Lab has significantly contributed to areas such as online safety and digital youth, with research published in prestigious conferences like ACM CHI and ACM CSCW. 

Reflecting on his vision for the IEEE Alabama Section, Dr. Ghosh said, "I am passionate about giving back to society, and IEEE provides an incredible platform to make that possible. It allows me to connect with like-minded individuals committed to technology, society, and humanity. I look forward to using my role as Chair to continue making a meaningful impact on the Alabama Section, IEEE Region 3, and beyond." 

Dr. Ghosh was recently inducted into the IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Honor Society for his outstanding leadership and contributions. His appointment as Chair of the IEEE Alabama Section highlights his personal achievements and underscores Jax State's commitment to fostering excellence in education, research, and professional development.
