Jax State Mourns the Passing of Dean Emeritus Dr. Dan Marsengill

The Jacksonville State University community is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Dan Marsengill, Dean Emeritus of the College of Music and Fine Arts, who died on November 20 at the age of 91.

Dr. Marsengill joined Jax State in 1971 as an Associate Professor of Music, quickly becoming vital to the university’s artistic and academic growth. In 1978, he was appointed Dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts, a position he held until his retirement in 1996. During his tenure, he was promoted to the academic rank of Full Professor in 1984 and later honored with the title of Dean Emeritus upon his retirement.

Dr. Marsengill’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. Under his leadership, the College of Music and Fine Arts flourished, fostering creativity and innovation while preparing students to excel in their respective fields. Even after his retirement, he remained an esteemed member of the Gamecock family, continuing to support the arts and the university community.

The Jax State family extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Marsengill’s family, friends and loved ones. His contributions to Jax State and the arts will be cherished and remembered for generations to come.
