Scholarships

The MCIS Department offers several competitive scholarships to support students majoring in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or Mathematics.

Mrs. Martha C. McCormick Scholarship

Established to promote the education of a deserving full-time undergraduate student enrolled at JSU. Students should be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or Mathematics and should be entering at least their sophomore year to be awarded. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and students must have a completed FAFSA on file. Past recipients may re-apply each year and their applications will be considered together with other first-time applicants.


Harry and Jean Cottingham Scholarship

The recipient shall be a full-time undergraduate student with 32 or more hours completed and be in good standing, preferably accepted to the College of Education and Professional Studies and majoring in math or science. If there is not a suitable candidate, then the scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in math, science, or education.


Dr. Wayne and Dr. Sara Finley Scholarship

Established by Drs. Wayne and Sara Finley of Birmingham, Alabama, to benefit full-time undergraduate students with preference given to students from the Alabama counties of Clay, Coosa, or Randolph. Preference will be given to students majoring in mathematics or science, either pre-professional or secondary education. Only students with at least a "B" average (3.00 GPA) will be eligible for the scholarship.


Hubert and Marcelline Barry Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Hubert and Marcelline Barry for full-time undergraduate students who are seniors majoring in mathematics. Candidates must be entering into their senior year in the fall semester. 


Ken Miller Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Ken Miller to benefit a minimum half-time undergraduate junior or above or graduate student enrolled in science, technology, engineering, or math; who is an Alabama resident or qualifies for in-state tuition.


Newbern Bush Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established in memory of Newbern Bush, a retired faculty member who taught mathematics. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time, native-born Alabama student who is a junior majoring in mathematics.


Wayne and Sharon L. Dempsey Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established in memory of Wayne and Sharon Dempsey for the benefit of students who have completed at least 30 hours of course work at JSU. Students must also be a Mathematics or Mathematics Education Major who have attained at least Junior status.


Wilson Endowment Scholarship

This scholarship is for students with an expressed desire to obtain a degree from JSU with a major in math and a minor in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) related field. Students must have an overall composite ACT score of 26, or an equivalent SAT score. In addition, candidates must be first-time freshmen with a minimum high school GPA of 3.5. This scholarship requires students to be enrolled full-time and can stack with merit awards to cover any remaining academic needs: tuition gaps, fees, room and board, and books. In addition, this scholarship is renewable for four years so long as the student remains connected to mathematics (with at least a minor).


Coming Soon: Dr. Jerald & Peggy Abercrombie Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established by Peggy Abercrombie to aid in the recruiting and/or retention of students in the Department of Mathematical, Computing and Information Sciences.  First priority would be for a student who is a mathematics major.
