How Your Mentor Helps

Mentoring That Leads Somewhere
Faculty mentoring often extends from the classroom into research, professional presentations, and preparation for life after graduation.
- Addie Lott received research and graduate-school application mentoring before being admitted to UAB’s Sociology Ph.D. program and JSU’s Master of Social Work program.
- Alicia Carter received faculty guidance and Alpha Kappa Delta funding to present research at the Southern Sociological Society Annual Meeting.
- Sassy Pilkington’s independent study developed into conference presentations and a coauthored manuscript.
Meeting with Your Mentor
Students meet with their faculty mentor after entering the program and are encouraged to continue meeting regularly as their interests and goals develop. During these meetings, students review their progress, discuss professional goals, and identify courses and opportunities that support their plans.
