Special Events Series

Faculty Commons strives to offer JSU faculty the chance to participate in diverse learning environments through focused professional development trainings and workshops.  Our Special Events Series highlights learning initiatives and experiences from a variety of disciplines and special interest events.

This series supports the commitment of JSU's Strategic Plan including the following strategic goal(s) and objectives:

  1. Engage (Commitment 2): Create symbiotic partnerships that impact the university learning environment, providing additional opportunities for the exchange of ideas, experiential learning, and community engagement, while allowing university members to give back to the community.

 

Goals:

1. Benefit of Belonging: Improve the accessibility of a safe, equitable, diverse campus supportive of all campus and community members.

  • Objective 2: Create environments to encourage campus and community members to connect and learn from each other.
  • Work with multiple departments across colleges to develop interdisciplinary opportunities that will enable faculty to learn about, from, and with different programs.

 

  1. Discover (Commitment 3): In an age of rapid educational change and innovation, we will continue to advance our capacity for creating diverse, meaningful, and accessible learning opportunities that prepare all learners (faculty included).

 

Goals:

  1. Experiences: Provide learning experiences that connect learners with real-world knowledge, skills, and opportunities.
  • Objective 1: Expand the use of High-Impact Learning in undergraduate and graduate programs Enhance existing and increase service learning
  • Objective 2: Expand the utilization of technology to support students, faculty, and staff. Provide professional development and training opportunities for faculty.
  1. Environments: Create and provide new learning environments characterized by modern facilities, technological enhancements, active learning, and engaging instruction
  • Objective 3: Provide learners access to active learning opportunities, engaging instruction, sustainable training, and professional development.
  • Provide inclusive training and professional development opportunities to staff across disciplines

  • To offer diverse and accessible learning experiences for faculty from across the disciplines
  • To facilitate exclusive events or special interest groups for faculty
  • To be informed about student success best practices as they relate to improved student persistence, retention, and graduation rates.
  • To provide faculty a place to share best practices for improving student success, especially through class/course engagement
  • To receive data from the Student Success Center team about learning support outcomes
  • To provide faculty and staff opportunities to review how the Student Success Center departments and The Writing Center use data to inform practice.

Bridging the Gap Through Initiatives, Outcomes, and Partnerships

Attendance and Registration: This all-day event welcomes faculty and staff to join sessions at their convenience. Register one time online (link below) for access to all sessions. Please note that on-site registration will be available as well.

SSC Class Speaker Request: The SSC knows that canceling classes is not always possible and would like to support faculty interested in participating. For those unable to attend due to class scheduling, the SSC will offer a Class Speaker service. To request class coverage, indicate your preference when registering online. Please note that this service is on a first-come, first-serve basis and limited to the availability of SSC staff.  After registration, a representative from the Student Success Center will contact you with additional information.

Event Description:

You are invited to the 2nd Annual Student Success Summit, a collaborative effort between Faculty Commons and the Student Success Center (SSC). This day-long professional development event aims to enhance faculty and staff understanding of student success best practices, focusing on persistence, retention, and graduation rates.

Featuring informative breakout presentations, poster sessions, and a guided discussion with regional employers, the Student Success Summit will cover current Student Success Center initiatives, outcomes related to these initiatives, and opportunities for faculty and staff to partner with the SSC to foster improved student success.  Highlights will include a detailed session on the Better Together Retention Initiative and poster sessions showcasing data-driven practices from SSC departments and The Writing Center.

Afternoon breakout sessions will delve into the Student Success Faculty Leadership Program, JSU Navigate, Equity in Student Success Project, and Initiatives Aimed at Adult Learners. The summit will conclude with real-time insights from regional employers in a guided panel discussion. Certificates will be provided for attendees, making this a valuable opportunity for professional development.

Event Features: Faculty and staff are invited to network between sessions while enjoying morning refreshments, a catered lunch, and an end-of-day reception featuring complimentary wine, beer, and party gifts.
