Faculty Prep Week 2022

JSU faculty, make plans to join your colleagues for a week of virtual training opportunities designed to help you prepare for the 2022-2023 academic year. Presenters will share useful tips, important reminders, and best teaching practices that will benefit both you and your students this fall.  Our summer professional development series will be presented via Teams and will end with an on-campus faculty prep workshop.  

Monday, August 8

Time: 11:00 AM-12:00 PM CST (1 HR Total Run Time)

Successful First Day Strategies for Faculty and Students:This session will explore who our students are and what they need from faculty, as well as first day classroom expectations, what getting started with Navigate, attendance verification, and syllabus design tips.  

Tuesday, August 9

Time: 1:00-2:00 (1 HR Total Run Time)

Meeting Our Students’ Needs: Success in the classroom is dependent on more than polished assignments and interesting lectures. This workshop will briefly and succinctly explore the ways our students learn and beneficial information for faculty pertaining to student support. Topics will include ADA compliance as it applies to class assignments, teaching styles, and Canvas content; useful information for teaching international students; the importance of inclusivity in the classroom; knowing the proper expectations, protocols, intervention policies, and points of contact when you encounter students in mental health distress; and understanding FERPA compliance in the physical and virtual classroom.    

Wednesday, August 10

Time: 10:30-12:00 (1.5 HRS Total Run Time)

  • Teaching Best Practices and What to Avoid: Session A-Online Synchronous and Asynchronous 

  • Teaching Best Practices and What to Avoid: Session B- Hybrid 

  • Teaching Best Practices and What to Avoid: Session C-Face-to-Face 

This quick hitting workshop will focus on strategies for success and moves to avoid when teaching online (asynchronous/synchronous), hybrid, and face-to-face classes. The presentation will take place in three 20-minute sessions with a 10-minute break between each; feel free to join the specific portion of the presentation that you are interested in learning more about. There will be a ten-minute break between sessions to allow faculty time to join between meetings.

Time: 1:30-2:00 Presentation, 2:00-2:15 Group Discussion (45 Mins Total Run Time)

Balancing Teaching with Research: Join your colleagues to discuss the challenges of balancing your teaching schedule with your research interests in this virtual workshop.  

Friday, August 12

Time: 10:00-2:00 (Food provided; Prizes drawn every hour!)  

Modality: In-Person Room 208 Self Hall  

Faculty Prep Workshop: Bring your laptops and notes and come to Self Hall to work on your syllabi, course assignments, and Canvas content.  Enjoy snacks win prizes while receiving help and inspiration from your colleagues, Faculty Commons, and Online@JSU.
