Rethinking Assessment for an AI-Rich Learning Environment

How do we know our assessments are still giving us the evidence of student learning we need?

Led by Katelyn Walker, Provost's Faculty Fellow for Quality Assessment, this three-part series will explore learning outcomes, writing, and assessment in an AI-rich learning environment. Rather than focusing on making assignments "AI-proof," faculty will consider what we want students to learn, what evidence demonstrates that learning, and how our assessment practices may need to evolve.

All Jax State faculty are invited to attend, whether or not they participate in the Learning Outcomes & Assessment Faculty Cohort.

Learning Outcomes & Assessment Faculty Cohort

Fall 2026–Spring 2027 | Limited to 6 Faculty | $500 Stipend

The Learning Outcomes & Assessment Faculty Cohort will give six faculty members the opportunity to take a deeper look at assessment within one of their own courses.

Course Assessment Redesign

Participants will select a course in which writing is a significant part of demonstrating student learning and examine how well its assessments align with intended learning outcomes. Throughout the fall, cohort members will consider:

• What do I want students to know or be able to do?
• What evidence would demonstrate that learning?
• Do my current writing assignments provide that evidence?
• How might those assessments need to evolve in an AI-rich learning environment?
• What expectations for AI use—or non-use—best support the learning I am trying to assess?

By the end of the fall semester, each participant will have one fully redesigned course with learning outcomes, writing assignments, assessment practices, and expectations for AI intentionally aligned.

From Redesign to Implementation

The work will continue into Spring 2027, when cohort members will implement their redesigned courses. Participants will collect pre- and post-assessment data to evaluate the impact of the changes and identify what can be learned from the redesign.

The goal isn't simply to redesign an assignment. It's to examine the relationship between learning outcomes, evidence of student learning, assessment practices, and AI across the course.

Who Should Apply?

The cohort is open to Jax State faculty, with six faculty members selected to participate.

Faculty who teach writing-intensive courses or other courses in which writing comprises a significant portion of the course grade are especially encouraged to apply.

You do not have to participate in the cohort to attend the Assessment Series workshops. All faculty are welcome at each of the three fall sessions.

Faculty Compensation

Faculty selected for the Learning Outcomes & Assessment Faculty Cohort will receive a $500 stipend for completing the full redesign and implementation process.

The stipend will be paid at the end of the Spring 2027 semester after:

• The redesigned course has been implemented.
• Required pre- and post-assessment/evaluation data have been collected.
• Cohort requirements have been completed.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Workshop Information

Workshop 1: Rethinking Assessment in an AI-Rich Classroom

Date/Time: September 17, 2:30-3:30
Description: Faculty will examine an existing course learning outcome and consider what they are actually trying to observe, what their current assessments allow them to see, and where an AI-rich environment may expose gaps between the two.

Takeaway: An identified learning outcome/competency and assessment gap to address.

Workshop 2: Designing Learning Activities that Make Student Thinking Visible

Date/Time: October 6, 2:30-3:30
Description: Faculty will use that identified gap to redesign an existing assignment or learning activities, exploring instructional practices that make students’ reasoning, decision-making, and learning processes more visible.

Takeaway: A redesigned assignment or learning activity aligned with the learning they want to observe.

Workshop 3: Assessing Student Thinking Through Process-Based Evidence

Date/Time: November 12, 2:30-3:30 

Description: Faculty will determine what evidence they need to collect from the redesigned learning experience and how they will assess it, with an emphasis on purposeful process artifacts and competency-based assessment.

Takeaway: An implementation-ready assessment plan for the redesigned course experience.
