Helen Companion has spent most of her life studying English, literature, and writing. Prior to receiving her B.A. (2017) and M.A. (2019) in English at JSU, she studied Creative Writing at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. During her time as a student at JSU, she worked one-on-one with students to improve their writing and communication skills in the JSU Writing Center, wrote blogs and articles for a number of online sources, presented unique ideas at conferences, and published two peer-reviewed academic articles in reputable journals. She was also the first graduate student in English in over 40 years to complete a graduate thesis. After graduating from JSU, she worked for Tutor.com (The Princeton Review) as a tutor, and eventually as a trainer, for English, Reading, Literature, English Language Learners, Career Services, and Student Success. In these positions, she worked with students of all levels and all over the world to improve their written communication skills, and she helped instructors and teachers adapt their teaching approaches to an online environment. During this time, she also worked with Prompt, the world’s leading reviewer of college admissions essays, to help students get into the colleges of their choice, which were often high-ranking universities and Ivy League schools. At the heart of these diverse experiences is a genuine desire and interest to understand both the English language and how to empower students to be better learners, communicators, writers, and people.
