FutureEd Apprenticeship Program
The FutureEd Apprenticeship Program is a pathway to teacher certification for those who are employed in a school system. This exciting opportunity allows paraprofessionals, aides, and other school personnel to pursue certification in various teaching fields. For this pilot program for the 2024-2025 academic year, Jax State offers pathways for:
- Secondary English Language Arts Education
- Secondary Social Studies Education
- Elementary Education
In order to be eligible for the apprenticeship pathway, candidates must:
- have prior college coursework sufficient for completing education courses within two years
- have been employed by a school system for at least one year
- receive a recommendation from the employing school
- meet all eligibility requirements (GPA, entry testing, background clearance, etc.) for teacher education
- Approved apprentices will be employed by the school system as a teacher apprentice and will follow the progression outlined below.
Year 1:
- Work as a co-teacher in the classroom of the journeyworker (mentor teacher)
- Receive a salary equal to 65% of teacher salary for a first-year Alabama teacher
- Complete year 1 of education coursework
- Maintain good standing with GPA, academic progress, and employing school
Year 2:
- Work in a classroom as teacher of record while still receiving mentorship from journeyworker
- Receive a salary equal to 85% of teacher salary for a first-year Alabama teacher
- Complete year 2 of education coursework
- Maintain good standing with GPA, academic progress, and employing school
- Upon completion of year 2, the apprentice will apply for professional certification once all certification requirements have been met.
