Bobby Mikel earned his degree from Jacksonville State University in 2007 in Communication with a concentration in Broadcast. Upon graduation, he began working in both the academic and professional sides of broadcast television. On the academic side, he has worked for the university producing commercials, television shows, and sporting events. For more than 15 years, he has also worked across the country as a freelancer in the professional television industry, primarily working remote sporting events across the country. His credits range from local television markets to ESPN and CBS. During this time, he has held almost every position behind the camera.

In 2020 he completed his Master’s in Instructional Technology and began teaching as an adjunct instructor bringing his real-world experience to the classroom. During his tenure as an adjunct instructor, he taught Intro to Television Production. The focus of the course is to replicate the real-world experiences one would expect to have in a live production. Having worked professionally in each of the roles the students fill he is able to provide experiential learning opportunities for each student.

He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in Digital and Strategic Communication at Liberty University. The current research focus areas include Race and the Senses Theory and Theory of Interactive Media Effects. The specific focus areas of the theories include analyzing how race affects communication and the whole of an individual as well as racial fluidity. His dissertation topic is the effects of social media on recruiting at higher education institutions. The topic specifically focuses on how the bidirectional communication of social media impacts prospective students’ decisions to attend a given institution. The pursuit of the terminal degree allows him to combine the theory and practice elements in professional communication.
