Dr. Joyce earned a Ph.D. in Communication from Southern Illinois University. Prior to joining the JSU faculty, she worked as the Vice President of Sales & Marketing at a non-profit organization that raised money for historic education and preservation.
Dr. Joyce is also an accomplished scholar in her profession and in academic leadership. She is the co-author of the book Effective Leadership Communication: A Guide for Department Chairs and Dean. She has also published research exploring messaging in athletics and higher education advertising and currently pursuing a project exploring social loss in athletics.
With more than 20 years of industry and academic work in marketing, public relations and advertising, her research foci have been on areas within leadership communication, advertising and strategic marketing communication, and tracking, analyzing, and benchmarking digital experiences.
It is this mix of professional focus and commitment to students that led to Dr. Joyce garnering the inaugural appointment as the Department of Communication’s Endowed Professor of Digital Audience Strategies and High-Impact Learning. Incorporating professional practice and aligning coursework with industry needs reflects the department’s commitment to maintaining an industry-current curriculum. This endowment demonstrates the unit’s initiatives to ensure job readiness through innovative, engaging forms of learning that develop stronger professionals. Combining proven industry techniques and tactics with creative content and innovative implementation, the professorship brings industry practices to the classroom to enhance and nurture students’ professional development and job readiness. The College of Business and Industry will also provide supplemental support to ensure the professor can leverage industry-current tools and practices to enable students to understand, design and execute strategies for connecting audiences by creating digital campaigns and content strategies and applying a variety of current industry practices that examine the intersection of tools and technology with media. It is the intent of the department to use this first endowed professor of high-impact learning be a model for future endowed lines focusing on high-impact practices in the classroom that ensure industry-current knowledge and skills among our graduates.
