It’s time for a new year on the Friendliest Campus in the South! The Spring 2024 semester begins on January 8, 2024. The following information attempts to answer some of the more frequently asked questions we receive from students at the start of each semester. Frequently Asked Questions
Make sure you are prepared for the upcoming semester by looking over the course materials that you’ll need for each class you’re taking. You can access this information on your class syllabus or by visiting the on-campus bookstore either in-person or online.
The Bookstore, usually open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will offer extended hours for the first week of classes:
- Monday and Tuesday, 7:15 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Students may use their excess Financial Aid both in the physical bookstore or online.
Make sure you login to your MyJaxState account and check your class schedule by clicking the Registration tab and selecting “Week at a Glance.” Your classes will be listed, and you will be able to see which building and room number your class is in. It will be listed as an abbreviation, such as MAH 130 (Martin Hall, Room 130). A list of building abbreviations is available. Check the interactive campus map for building locations.
The Department of Public Safety is always available to serve you. Campus police are on duty 24/7, 365 days a year, to keep campus safe and secure. Please feel free to contact a team member anytime through the Cocky Watch App or by calling 256-782-5050.
Fraternity and Sorority Life will open for recruitment opportunities on January 8. Each council and organization has its own new member timeline, as follows:

College Panhellenic Bid Opportunities Open Jan. 8

National Panhellenic Council NPHC Expo: Feb. 12
Learn about joining NPHC organizations during this special event on Feb. 12, 6:30 p.m., at Leone Cole Auditorium. Each organization will also have an interest meeting. For more information, complete the NPHC Interest Form.

The Gamecock Express bus travels between Trustee Circle, Mountain Street, Forney Avenue and the academic buildings on the north side of campus on Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The jsuRIDE system is a small fleet of vehicles that shuttles students, on request, anywhere on campus and to various locations in town – operating much like a free Lyft or Uber. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (last off-campus pickup at 8:30 p.m.) and Fridays, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (last off-campus pickup at 4 p.m.). To request a ride, download the jsuRIDE app in the App Store or Google Play Store.
Here are a few deadlines to keep in mind regarding Financial Aid and your student account.
- Payment Deadline is January 17 at 11:59 pm. Please be sure to check your JSU email for communication regarding outstanding balances and aid requirements.
- The Office of Student Accounts will begin processing refunds daily after the payment deadline.
- Wondering if you qualify for Federal Work Study? See if you’re eligible by contacting the Financial Aid Office at 256-782-5006.
- Get a head start on next fall by applying for over 100 competitive scholarships with the JAXAPP. Applications for 2024 opened September 1, 2023 and the deadline is February 1, 2024.

Are you looking for a job this year? See if you are Federal Work Study eligible by contacting Financial Aid at (256) 782-5006. Check the Human Resources website for a current list of openings.
Sodexo is also hiring cooks, line servers, supervisors, dining attendants, dishwashers, catering assistants and other staff to work in full-time and part-time positions in dining facilities across campus. For more information, stop by Jack Hopper Dining Hall or the TMB Food Court. Positions are listed on dining.jsu.edu and indeed.com.
Housed within the Student Success Center, JSU Tutoring and Academic Support offers free tutoring to students in all general education courses and most upper level math and science courses. Students may schedule appointments through JSU Navigate or on the second floor of Houston Cole Library. Students also have free access to Tutor.com 24/7 through Canvas, as well as free writing assistance through The Writing Center in the Department of English.
During the first week of classes, tutors will available Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tips on how to start your semester strong:
- Make sure you attend every class and review each syllabus.
- Enter all important dates into your calendar with reminders set at least 24 hours in advance.
- Build study time into your schedules for each class. Take breaks and study in calm and comfortable environments.
- Schedule tutoring appointments at the beginning of the semester. If you see that you don't need them, you can always cancel them. Do not wait until you're in trouble or right before an exam to schedule an appointment.
