What is the Goal: John Henry, the Machine, or something else?

Presented by Dr. Benjamin Gross, Associate Professor of Political Science, Sociology and Political Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences

Dr. Ben Gross

Abstract: The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) raises concerns about students bypassing knowledge and skill development when completing assignments. While Large Language Models (LLMs) train on vast datasets, they do not consume actions taken within a video game. Crafting questions that require students to analyze and reflect on game choices prevents reliance on AI-generated responses to complete the assignment. Additionally, leveraging AI as a tool in producing answers can assist students in understanding concepts, processes, or other parts of these video games. Incorporating video games into courses, therefore, enables instructors to design assignments that verify knowledge and skill acquisition while encouraging purposive AI use.
