 September Museum Firefly Festival

The Anniston Museum of Natural History celebrates 74 years on Saturday, September 18, with the Firefly Festival, a family-friendly evening highlighting the nocturnal world of nature. Beginning at 3 p.m., live animals roam the exhibit halls and families explore the night sky in Starlab. At 5, enjoy the sounds of world beat music group SAPIEN, take a nite hike, roast marshmallows or stroll the twinklelite garden. Parking Enforcement Begins Sept. 13

The University Police Department will begin issuing parking violations for students, faculty, and staff that violate University Parking Regulations on Monday September 13, 2004.  Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to purchase their parking decals before enforcement begins.  Decals must be purchased online at police.jsu.edu.  If you have questions about the decal procedures, please contact UPD at 782-5050.

PEEHIP Card Conversion

The new Federal privacy guidelines for all health plans required transitioning to non-Social Security Numbers for each participant's contract number. In the process of making this transition this past weekend for the PEEHIP, Blue Cross encountered a significant "slowing" in this process due to the extremely large number of members in the PEEHIP group. This problem occurred only in the drug claims processor.   MORE >>>

Print Shop Announces Slight Increase in Prices

Due to the costs of replacing outdated equipment and an increase in the cost of paper and other supplies, the Print Shop has announced a small increase in prices effective October 1. Advance notice of the change is being given to provide time for campus offices to adjust their printing budgets for the fall. This marks the first increase in several years. MORE>>>

Highlighting Faculty Authors in Next Friends of Houston Cole Library Newsletter

The Friends of Houston Cole Library would like to highlight faculty authors in the next edition of its newsletter. If you have published a book during the last academic year, September 2003 - August 2004, please e-mail Karen Gregg at kgregg@jsu.edu giving her your name, department, book title, and a sentence or two describing your book. The deadline for submitting this information is Friday, September 17th.

UPD Announces New Initiatives

The University Police Department welcomes all faculty, staff, and students back to campus for the 2004-2005 academic year.  UPD would like to announce the following new initiatives for the new school year. The police department has recently:  automated the procedures for registering vehicles on campus, purchased and installed new parking enforcement software, enacted a mutual aid agreement with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, and added Deputy Lee Terry and K-9 Officer “Euro” to the department’s reserve program.   MORE >>>

JSU's 2004-05 Drama Season Tickets on Sale

Season passes are are on sale for Jacksonville State University's 2004-05 drama season. Five family-friendly shows are scheduled. They are Shakespeare's As You Like It; Ibsen's A Doll's House; a musical by Holmes, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens; a new play, Heroes by Muschell, winner of the 2004 Southern Playwright's Competition; and a comic fantasy, On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning.  A season pass includes one ticket to each of the above plays.  Cost of the passes are as follows:  Adults, $34.00; senior citizens and JSU personnel, $29.00; students and military, $24.00.  Passes may be purchased by calling 256-782-5648.  Mastercard, Visa, and Discover are accepted.

Civic Chorale Invites New Members

New members are invited to join the Calhoun County Civic Chorale, which begins rehearsals for its fall season at 7:15 p.m. on Monday 13 September 2004 in the Performance Center of Mason Hall at Jacksonville State University. This season the Chorale  will perform a concert entitled "Songs of Mary" and will include music by C. P. E. Bach, Britten, Berg, Rachmaninoff and others. The Chorale consists of area members as well as JSU students and faculty. It is under the direction of Dr. Patricia Corbin, director of choral activities. The 13 September rehearsal is a "New Member Open House." Community members may come and participate in the rehearsal to see what the chorale is like without further obligation. Participating singers should have voices that are able to blend with others and some experience reading music. The chorale is one of five ensembles of the David Walters Department of Music. Each season the chorale performs a major choral work, often with orchestra. For further information, contact Dr. Corbin in the choral office at 782-5544.

JSU Alumni Office Sponsors Bus Trip to BJCC for "Carousel"

The JSU Alumni Office is sponsoring bus trip to see "Carousel" at the BJCC, Saturday, September 25, 8 p.m. The bus leaves the Gamecock Center at 6 p.m. Tickets in Grand Tier (Rows L & M) are $35 per person. Browder and Classroom Educators Initiate “Future Democracy Course of Study”

Getting young people to take responsibility for the future of American democracy is an ambitious assignment, but that's what former Congressman Glen Browder and some classroom educators hope to accomplish with a new initiative for high school and college students.  Browder, now Eminent Scholar in American Democracy at Jacksonville State University, and several Calhoun County School System teachers have put together a course of study—focusing on “The Future of American Democracy”—that challenges young citizens to think seriously about "what America means" and "how America ought to work" in the twenty-first century.   MORE >>>

Dr. Glen Roswal Promotes Special Olympics Programs Worldwide

Dr. Glen Roswal, Professor in the Department of HPER at Jacksonville State University, is leading a pioneer project in the expansion of Special Olympics programs in Asia, Eurasia, and Europe. Special Olympics is an international year round program of sports training and competition for people with mental retardation. More than 1 million athletes in over 150 countries train and compete in 26 Olympic-type summer and winter sports. The Special Olympics goal is to provide Special Olympics programs to an additional one million individuals.   MORE >>>

Online Registration Mandatory to Purchase JSU Parking Decals

In an effort to better serve the campus community, the University Police Department has automated the procedure for purchasing parking decals.  The registration process is quick and easy.  Since the beginning of this automation procedure on August 1, 2004, faculty, staff, and students must now register online at police.jsu.edu to purchase their parking decals.  Online registration is mandatory for all JSU faculty, staff, and students.  The University Police will continue to register faculty, staff, and students requiring a JSU handicap decal at UPD.  MORE >>>

JSU Music Department Faculty Recital Sept. 12

The JSU Music Department is presenting a Faculty Recital, Sunday, September 12, 2004, 3:00 p.m., Mason Hall Performance Center. The concert is benefiting the Legacy Scholarship, featuring performances by faculty members of the Vocal, Keyboard, and Instrumental Divisions. Art Contest Scheduled for Hispanic Heritage Month

Jacksonville State University's Office of Multicultural Services and Be Latino of Anniston are sponsoring an art contest in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which will be observed 15 September through 15 October. The contest is to help build cultural awareness among children aged six to sixteen and will be held in Theron Montgomery Building on campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday 18 September. MORE >>>

Annual Faculty and Staff Address by President William A. Meehan

President Meehan addressed the faculty and staff in their annual meeting. Dr. Meehan stated the University met its mission with excellence in 2003-04 despite another year of financial hardship and attributed the institution’s many accomplishments to the outstanding cooperation and support of faculty and staff. University Police to Host Bicycle Safety Course

The Calhoun Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will sponsor a free bicycle safety course at the University Police Department from 8 a.m. until noon on 18 September 2004. The program is suitable for all ages of bicyclists. Instruction will include bicycle maintenance, how to choose the proper bike, and rules of the road. Dr. Carlton Jones, a longtime advocate of using the bicycle as an alternate means of transportation, will conduct the course. He endorses using the bicycle for enjoyment also. Dr. Jones is a safety instructor certified by the League of American Bicyclists. He also works closely with the Alabama Bicycle Coalition, called AlaBike, which is the state's bicycle advocacy coalition. He will also inspect bicycles for participants who bring theirs to class. Beloit College's 'Mind-Set List'

Beloit College's 'Mind-Set List' by Kellie Bartlett shows what separates today's freshmen from their professors. In 1986, the Challenger space shuttle exploded, Chernobyl melted down, and most students entering college this year were born. Author Barbara Moss to Speak Oct. 28

Former Jacksonville State University student Barbara Robinette Moss will be among three authors speaking at the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County's Accent on the Authors series luncheon on 28 October, which will launch the book tour for Ms. Moss's latest book Fierce. Ms. Moss' previous book, a memoir called Change Me into Zeus's Daughter, won several state and national awards, including the 2002 Alabama Author Award. The book told of her childhood in Anniston and of struggling with poverty and a facial abnormality. Fierce chronicles her life as a single mother trying to establish her career in art and overcome an emotionally painful past. MORE >>>

Distance Education Is Option for Students

In 1992, Jacksonville State University’s distance education program offered students the opportunity to take courses through the use of videocassettes. About 200 students signed up. Since then, distance learning has boomed. During the spring semester 2004, more than 4,000 students took classes that featured some aspect of distance learning. Students may experience many levels of learning at a distance. A student may want to gain certification rather than a degree. Distance learning course work can lead to certification in fields such as geographic information systems and emergency management. A bachelor’s in nursing can be earned through the STEP program. A master’s can be earned in the area of public administration with a concentration in emergency management. A Master of Science in emergency management is also available. MORE >>>

Muscle Shoals Minister Publishes Western Novels

When a man told Jacksonville State alumnus Rev. Tom Whatley that he could roll a cigarette while “on the back of a running mule,” Rev. Whatley knew he had an anecdote for his next western novel. Rev. Whatley has already had three novels published during the last four years. He has a fourth set to be published and is ready to mail off his first mystery novel. The sixty-four-year-old minister of a 1,450-member church, Woodward Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals, is poised to begin his third career. He hopes to retire from preaching within the next couple of years and spend more time writing. MORE >>>

JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition Nov. 3

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra is pleased to announce the third annual JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition, open to students ages 12-25 who reside in Northeast Alabama. Registered students of JSU shall be considered residents of Northeast Alabama. Auditions will be held on the campus of Jacksonville State University on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2004, from 6-9 p.m. in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. MORE >>>

JSU Launches Spanish-Language Web Service

With the help of a JSU student from El Salvador, Jacksonville State University is now offering  a Web site — http://noticias.jsu.edu — for some of Alabama's more than 75,000 Spanish-speaking residents who need academic and other information about the university. Graciela Garcia, an International House student and granddaughter of Julio Adalberto Rivera, president of El Salvador from 1962 to 1967, serves as the News Bureau's Spanish translator. She also volunteers as a contact person for Spanish-speaking parents, prospective students, and others who may feel more comfortable making initial contact at JSU in Spanish. MORE >>>

Annual MDA Gus Edwards Classic 2004 Sept. 11

Guided Tour of Talladega National Forest: Shoal Creek District

The LRCFS is presenting a driving/hiking tour of the Shoal Creek Ranger District on September 18th at Talladega National beginning at 9:00 a.m. Discover unique areas that are rarely seen by the public. Learn about the ecology of the national forest and observe the transition of summer to fall. Bring lunch, water, and a camera as we explore the beautiful scenery of life in the forest. Alumni to Share Secrets of Success; Public Invited

Jacksonville State University’s placement office has scheduled several successful Alabamians to serve on a job advice panel scheduled for a public meeting from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday 30 September in Room 101 Merrill Building. Flint Knapping Workshop Sept. 11

The LRCFS is presenting a flint knapping workshop on September 11th at DeSoto State Park beginning at 1:00 p.m. Come learn how the Native American peoples made rock tools. This workshop will focus on methods, safety, and cultural issues involved in flint-knapping. Beginners are especially encouraged although experts are welcome, too. Taught by Larry Beane and other talented "knappers", participants will take home the ability to make their own flint tools and the inspiration to continue this ancient art on their own. Jacksonville was listed as a Best Sports City by the Sporting News today. Boston was listed as No. 1, with Oakland-San Francisco-New Jersey tied for No. 2. Jacksonville, Alabama, was ranked at 205 on the list that identified 368 top-ranked cities. See http://msn.foxsports.com/story/2631604.

Federal Employment Workshop on Sept. 29

Career Placement Services will be hosting a Federal Employment Workshop on Wednesday, September 29th, at the Houston Cole Library beginning at 3:00 p.m. Timothy Grey, the Director of Personnel and Training at the Redstone Arsenal, will be leading the sessions to be held in the Library computer lab. In addition to providing students with valuable information about the benefits of Federal Employment, Mr. Grey will personally assist any students that wish to submit a Federal application online. Students that attend this workshop will have the opportunity to ask specific questions as they access the computers and complete the application process with step-by-step instruction. MORE >>>

New Jobs for JSU Students

Ten JSU students were recently hired into Fall co-op positions with Choice Fabricators, Inc. Two students are from the College of Business and eight are from the College of Technology. Job opportunities will range from Human Resources to Robotics and Quality Control. Choice Fabricators was established in Attalla, AL in 1981 and has grown to over 300 employees. They remain a privately owned company with customers that include Emerson Electric, General Electric, Maytag, and Whirlpool. Instructions for Purchasing Online Parking Decals

In an effort to better serve the campus community, the University Police Department has automated the procedure for purchasing parking decals.  The registration process is quick and easy.  Decals are now available for faculty, staff, and students at police.jsu.edu.  Online registration is mandatory for all JSU faculty, staff, and students.  Persons requesting a JSU handicap decal must register for their blue or red decal online before applying for their JSU handicap parking permit at the University Police Department.  MORE >>>

Montana Rockies Rail Tour Sponsored by JSU Alumni Office

The Alumni Office is offering the Montana Rockies rail tour — three days’ travel on board a steam locomotive during a fall foliage trip 9 – 15 October 2004. The package includes a welcome orientation, six nights' lodging, travel on the train — including daily onboard lunch, guides and narrators, continental breakfasts and non-alcoholic beverages. Photo opportunities will include the historic Livingston Depot Center; Cody, Wyoming; Buffalo Bill Historical Center; and Yellowstone National Park with lunch at Old Faithful Inn. The price per person depends on accommodations: double–$1950, single–$2350. Price includes the excursion and round-trip airfare from Atlanta, Georgia. JSU Nursing Classes Not Listed in the Fall Class Schedule Book

This is an announcement regarding nursing classes which will be offered in Fall 2004 that are not in the JSU Fall Class Schedule Book. SGA Involvement Meeting Sept. 15th

Attention all Students who want to be involved. SGA Involvement Meeting is to be held at 6:00 p.m., September 15th in the TMB 3rd Floor Auditorium. The SGA Involvement Meeting is for all students who want to become actively involved in the SGA. This meeting will describe all of the committees that students can get involved with and will give the students a chance to see what's available for them.
