Lucky Seven: JSU Peer Educators Awarded Outstanding Program of the Year at
The Bacchus Network Area Conference

For the seventh year in a row, JSU Peer Educators were recognized by the Bacchus Network as an exemplary program in Area 8. This area includes all colleges and universities in the states of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. JSU Peer Educators were awarded Area 8 Outstanding Program of the Year, and Ms. Ashley Gaither was awarded Area 8 Student of the Year at the spring conference held at the University of Alabama on March 28, 2009.

This year the JSU Peer Educators and the JSU Peer Educators advisors presented programs for the first time. “Don’t Forget to SING” was presented by the JSU Peer Educators focusing on campus safety and their program on pedestrian safety held in September 2008. The advisors presented "Making 'Making the Grade" about the academic side of JSU's program. JSU Peer Educators receive 3 semester hours credit for the academic year-- Fall and Spring semesters.

"The area conferences held in the spring are a great opportunity for students to see what other colleges and universities are doing. I am thrilled our Peer Educators were able to go and especially present. For them to be recognized for seven years in a row as the outstanding program in Area 8 is quite the accomplishment," said Todd K. Prater, one of the group's advisors.

At the honors banquet JSU Peer Educators were recognized for their efforts in sponsoring the Pedestrian Awareness Day. In recognizing JSU, the awards committee was impressed by the collaboration from other departments the organization receives as well as the support of the administration. Ms. Ashley Gaither was nominated by her advisors selected by the Area 8 awards committee. Ashley has been with the organization for two years and serves on the Peer Educator Coordinators Team.

The JSU Peer Educators have had a very productive 2008-2009 school year and wish to thank the university for its continued support. To find out more about the JSU Peer Educators contact Counseling Services at 256-782-5475.
