ELI Online Intensive English Program

Improve your English rapidly with 12 hours per week of live instruction. Your teachers at the English Language Institute (ELI) will prepare you for the language and academic requirements of university study and the professional workplace. 

You will be confident that you have the real-world skills to communicate effectively in:

Listening, Speaking & Critical Thinking

Upgrade your verbal skills, especially your ability to communicate effectively at college and in the workplace. 

Reading, Writing & Critical Thinking

Read, write, and research at a professional level. Think critically about what you are reading and writing, participate in discussions, and collaborate with other students on team projects. 

Public Speaking & Presentation

Become more confident organizing presentations and speaking to a live audience.

Advanced Pronunciation

Produce the sounds of professional English. We will work on your pronunciation, intonation ("melody"), stress patterns ("rhythm"), and other elements that fluent speakers use.

Simulated Course

Every session will feature a mini-course that simulates an actual university course, such as American Cinema, U.S. History., or Website Design. 

Conversation Partners

To practice the English that you're learning in the classroom, and to learn more about university and American culture, you will be matched with one or more JSU students with whom you will meet regularly under the guidance of an ELI teacher.

Also, if you're continuing to the JSU Undergraduate or Graduate program, your ELI Certificate of Successful Completion means that you won't need a TOEFL or IELTS score for admission. Just select "Conditional Admission" in your ELI application.

Schedule

Each of the seven weeks provides 12 hours of live instruction, for a total of 84 hours. As you shop for English training, remember that extensive, intensive, live instruction is the best way to learn a language.

Before you apply, note that the Intensive English Program is designed for students about to enter an English-speaking university or workforce. In your application, you will be asked to state your highest score on one of the following English tests:

Note 1: If you have not recently taken one of the above tests, you can take our free ELI Placement Test. After we respond with your score and recommendations, you can complete your application.

Note 2: ELI Online is delivered via Canvas (Jacksonville State University's learning management system) and Microsoft Teams, which needs enough internet bandwidth to videoconference. Please test your connection before you apply.

After you submit your application:

1. You will receive an automatic confirmation email.
2. Within 3 business days after the university's International Admissions office processes your application, you will receive an acceptance email with your JSU student information (JSU email and MyJSU login info).
3. Then, before the first day of class, you will receive information to access the Program.
