Dr. Mitchell began teaching at Jacksonville State in the summer of 2007.  

Dr. Mitchell teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in history/social studies education, general education courses, educational research courses, and she frequently supervises students that are completing practical experiences in area schools. Her current research interests include: improving student engagement in secondary classrooms through the use of problem- and project-based instruction, effective use of technology to engage students and improve learning in secondary classrooms, and improving learning in both on-campus and online university courses. Dr. Mitchell also has an interest in historical research in the area of the 20th Century civil rights movements.

Dr. Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Jacksonville State University. Her B.S. was a double major in History Education and English Education. She also earned a Master's degree from Jacksonville State in History Education with an endorsement for educational technology.

Dr. Mitchell taught in Augusta, GA, at Augusta State University as an Assistant Professor in the College of Education. During the time she was pursuing her Ph.D. at Auburn University, Dr. Mitchell worked at Auburn as an instructor, research and teaching assistant, and distant education graduate assistant. She also worked on several grants and projects involving students learning through problem-based instruction, including the Persistent Issues in History Project, a grant funded in large part by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Dr. Mitchell's teaching experience also includes five years at Banks Middle School in the Birmingham City School System in Birmingham, Alabama, and six years teaching at Anniston Middle School in Anniston, Alabama.  At the 6-12 level, Dr. Mitchell taught history, English, and technology courses.  Additionally, she served on numerous committees, worked as the Technology Coordinator for Anniston Middle School for three years, served as the Title I director for Anniston Middle School for two years, and was voted "Teacher of the Year" at Anniston Middle School in 2005.

For relaxation, Dr. Mitchell enjoys coaching youth soccer, gardening, and cooking.
