Teaching College Writing Graduate Certificate and Microcredential
The Teaching College Writing Graduate Certificate and Microcredential is a nine-hour program that may be completed 100% online (asynchronous and synchronous) over fall and spring semesters.
This program provides individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to teach first-year college writing courses at any two- or four-year college or university. Students take coursework on strategies for teaching Composition I and Composition II, as well as an introductory course in Rhetoric and Composition to ground the practical in sound pedagogical theory.
Graduate Certificate
Individuals who are not currently enrolled in a degree program at JSU may apply to the Graduate Certificate program and complete it as a stand-alone certificate program.
- This program is perfect for someone who already holds a master’s degree in another field but would like to pivot to a career in teaching college English and needs to work towards acquiring 18 hours of graduate coursework in English to do so. (Also completing the nine-hour Teaching College Literature Graduate Certificate program will allow you to acquire the total 18 hours.)
- This program is also perfect for educators who already hold their master’s degrees in Education, would like to teach Dual Enrollment English courses at their high schools, and need to acquire 18 hours of graduate coursework in English to do so.
- Students who complete these three courses in the graduate certificate program may decide to enter the Master of Arts in English program and complete the remaining seven courses toward the degree – you’re a third of the way there!
- Please review our Graduate Certificate Disclosure information.
Microcredential
Students who are currently enrolled in a degree program at JSU may simply take the three courses in the program and complete it as a Microcredential, embedded within their larger degree program. They do not need to apply to the Graduate Certificate program.
- A student who completes this program may apply the nine hours of credit toward the MA with a major in English or the MA with a major in Integrated Studies.
- The nine hours of credit may also be applied toward the MSE in Secondary Education: English Language Arts 6-12 or the Alternative Class A MSE in Secondary Education: English Language Arts 6-12.
- All coursework for the MA or MSE must be completed within six years.
- Hours earned through a graduate certificate/microcredential program may only be applied to one graduate degree.
