Arts and Humanities Open House
College Arts and Humanities Open House
This upcoming Preview Day, Saturday, November 12th, will see the College of Arts and Humanities on full display as departments host demonstrations, give facility tours and answer questions for visitors. This new event will allow potential students to further explore JSU, taking them beyond a typical Preview Day experience and immersing them in studying within the College of Arts and Humanities. The Department of Art and Design will be demonstrating art techniques in all of their concentrations. Below are the participating departments and their respective spaces.
Art and Design
Visitors will be hosted at all three art facilities on campus – Carlisle Hall, Hammond Hall, and Anders Hall – to receive a tour. In addition, department faculty will lead demonstrations in painting, drawing, illustration, graphic design, photography, ceramics, and printmaking.
Theatre and Film
The Open House at the film facilities will cover a tour of the Longleaf Studios building, including both sound stages and classroom spaces. Students will also have the opportunity to see the technology used by the department, such as greenscreens and lighting equipment, and ask questions about the program and curriculum.
Music
Visitors of the Department of Music will explore the band room, choral room, recording studio, class piano lab, and Apple computer lab. Each floor of Mason Hall will highlight a specific performance area; Jazz will be featured on the first floor while Choral Music will be on the second and the Marching Southerners on the third.
English
The English major now has concentrations in Creative Writing, Literature, and Professional Writing; in addition, the English Department is also home to the university's new Game Studies minor. Visitors to the English Department will sample these new academic programs by experiencing our new Digital Writing Lab and Writing Center, home to gaming computers and other software and hardware that assist students in their writing, game creation, and other multimodal projects, such as podcasts. Activities include an "escape room" and a social media writing activity, plus the opportunity to win a new English major t-shirt.
