Online@JSU offers two tracks to instructors at Jacksonville State University who wish to become JSU certified online instructors.
Track 1 is for instructors who have never taught an online course, and instructors who are relatively new to teaching online.
Track 2 is for instructors who have several years of experience teaching online courses.
Instructors are encouraged to select the track that best meets their level of experience in teaching online.
Track 1 is a course offered once a semester, with a 15 seat maximum, delivered through a variety of methods:
Fall (hybrid course, 6 weeks)
Spring (hybrid course, 6 weeks)
Summer (1 week, daily meetings)
During the course, instructors will learn and apply best practices in building and teaching an online course. The course covers topics such as creating pathways (course navigation), creating and organizing content, accessibilty and ADA, learning objectives and assignment alignment and learning unit design and build.
Instructors will be required to complete a specified percentage of the activities and assignments in the course. If an instructor does not complete the specified percentage, s/he will be asked to drop the course and try again during another offering of the course. The instructor will be allowed to keep the work s/he has already completed, and start the course again from that point. Once the course has been completed, instructional designers in Online@JSU will review the overall work completed and provide feedback and suggestions. The instructor will then receive certification in online teaching at JSU.
If an instructor feels that s/he is an experienced online instructor, s/he may apply to be admitted to Track 2.
Once a request has been submitted, instructional designers in Online@JSU look at courses taught by the instructor to determine whether the instuctor should be admitted to Track 2. If the instructor is admitted to Track 2, s/he will be asked to submit a brief narrative outlining their online teaching experience. The instructor will also be asked to identify a course that s/he would like to be reviewed, as well as insight into any issues or interests the instructor may have in working on the identified course.
Online@JSU will then review the course and provide feedback and suggestions. Instructors may be asked to complete different projects directly related to updating/revising/improving the course. The feedback/suggestions/projects are individualized based upon the needs of the instructor and the course. Once the process has been completed, the instructor will receive certification in online teaching at JSU.
If you are interested in earning certification in online teaching at JSU, please complete the survey. The survey will collect some information from you, and direct you to apply for Track 1 or Track 2.
