JACKSONVILLE -- Aug. 20, 1999 -- Anyone concerned about "loss of the American Dream" and
other disturbing trends in American democracy -- and what might be done about it -- should come hear
the provocative but enlightening public lecture series by JSU's Dr. Glen Browder. Beginning Wednesday evening, Sept. 8, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. (reception begins at 5:30 p.m.) on the 11th Floor of Houston Cole Library, the professor and Eminent Scholar in American Democracy will speak from more than 16 years of political experience, including eight years as a U.S. Congressman, about "The Contemporary Disarray of American Democracy." In the opening address Browder will present a rhetorical proposition ("Is America Dying?"), which will serve as the philosophical backdrop. Anyone interested in a free society and democratic ideals should hear Dr. Browder examine the facts and issues in the series of free public lectures or in the in-depth course, "THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY" (Political Science 475M--undergraduate credit; Political Science 575M--graduate credit). To inquire about registering for credit, call the JSU Admission's Office at 256-782-5400 or the Department of Political Science at 256-782-5650. Browder said, "This is not a doom and gloom lecture series. What I hope to do is to help our students and the broader public toward a healthy appreciation of America and American democracy. At the end of this series I hope we will all be able to say that America and American democracy still work." The lecture dates are as follows (the public lecture begins at 6:15 p.m. each day): Wednesday, September 8, 1999 - Lecture # 1 -- "The Contemporary Disarray of American Democracy: A Rhetorical Proposition." Wednesday, September 22, 1999 - Lecture #2 -- "A Systems Theory of Dysfunctional America." Wednesday, September 29, 1999 - Lecture # 3 -- "Political Observation Number One: The Favorable National Environment of American Democracy Has Disappeared."
