JSU Confronts NCAA's 4-Year Moratorium
on Possible Move from 1AA to 1A

The NCAA's Division I Board of Directors enacted a four-year moratorium on Friday, August 10, 2007 placing a ban on accepting new Division I members and moves between its subdivisions - the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II and Division III as reported by Mike Perrin, staff writer for the Birmingham News. According to Perrin, this could put the brakes on Jacksonville State's proposed move from the Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA) to the Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A).

Quoting JSU's Athletics Director Jim Fuller, Perrin states "JSU's Board of Trustees created an exploratory committee to research a move and that process will continue...but with the ban the earliest the Gamecocks could apply to move up would be August 2011."

Perrin summarizes JSU's stance: "Despite NCAA decision, JSU [is] researching going big time"--the NCAA may have barred the door to its big-time football subdivision for now, but Jacksonville State officials said the Gamecocks are still going full-speed ahead with their study into moving up. The moratorium was enacted by the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors and was endorsed by the NCAA Executive Committee Membership Working Group, a panel that is studying the association's three-division structure and its growth.
