Homecoming Festivities 2006

Start stuffing tissue paper into floats, painting banners and decorating doors; Homecoming Week 2006 is on its way.

This year, JSU will celebrate with a number of activities during and around the week of Oct.16, all leading up to the Gamecock's football game vs. Tennessee State at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, October 21.

There is no specific theme for Homecoming this year. Student Government Association's Vice President of Student Senate Moody Duff simply says, "Be creative." Instead of limiting ideas to one theme, the SGA wants to leave the theme open for increased ingenuity.

Events planned during Homecoming Week (Oct. 16-21) include Karaoke in the Café at Jack Hopper Dining Hall, Wednesday, October 18 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Everyone is also invited to attend J-Day, the following day, on October 19. From 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., on the lawn of the TMB, activities are set to include laser tag, Dance Dance Revolution, mechanical bull, football obstacle course and photo dog tags. The SGA will also be serving up cotton candy, popcorn, hotdogs and hamburgers.

The Homecoming Queen will be announced under the stars on Paul Carpenter Field at the bonfire/pep rally Thursday at 8 p.m. The Marching Southerners and Ballerinas will be there to entertain and excite the crowd and help cheer on the team. Students also gather on this night to display banners that will be judged. The top three winners will be awarded cash prizes from the SGA and their banners will be displayed at the football game. For more information and complete banner rules, please contact the Office of Student Life at (256) 782-5491.

JSU faculty and staff also catch the spirit of Homecoming with a door-decorating contest. Through this contest, the students can finally challenge the staff and their professors to produce a creative concept. In order to participate, a form must be turned in to the Office of Student Life by Thursday, October 12. Judging of the doors will take place on Friday, October 20. Contact the Office of Student Life for complete rules and regulations.

There will also be a number of Alumni reunions occurring on October 20 as well. The ROTC alumni, Criminal Justice alumni, Omega Psi Phi alumni, '60s group, Black alumni chapter and International House alumni all have scheduled to gather during Homecoming Week. Invitations have also been sent out to the Class of 1956 for a dinner this evening, celebrating 50 years as JSU alumni, held on the 11th floor of the Houston Cole Library. Any alumni seeking more information should contact Kaci Ogle at (256) 782-5405.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Marching Southerners. Normally, the Grey Echelon (Southerners and Ballerina alumni) also gathers on Homecoming day to form a reunion band for the halftime show. However, this year, for the golden anniversary, Director of Bands Ken Bodiford invites all past members to a two-day event starting Friday, November 10. More information for this reunion can be found at http://alumni.marchingsoutherners.org.

Homecoming Day:

The Alumni House will be open from 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 21. Also starting that morning, the Communication Dept. will host a brunch from 9:15 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Contact Tammy Mize, if you have questions or need to reserve a place, at (256) 782-5300.

A community favorite, the Homecoming Parade, begins at 11 a.m. The parade will start around Hardee's on Pelham Road North (Hwy. 21) and end in front of the Theron Montgomery Building. Having stuffed hundreds of tiny tissue paper into wire fencing, student groups will proudly display their colorful floats in the parade. One can anticipate many other sights, and if close enough, might get thrown a piece of candy. Wrapping up the parade, the Southerners will march through town playing the JSU Fight Song.

After the parade, from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m., there will be a number of open houses taking place. A complete list and information for more details can be found at http://www.jsu.edu/news/july_dec2006/100306-hc-open-house.html.

There will also be a large cookout at noon on Gamecock Field, located between Stevenson Gym and Paul Snow Stadium. The cost is $9 adults/$5 children 10 and under.

Kick-off against Tennessee State is at 2:30 p.m. in Paul Snow Stadium. The game will also be broadcast on CSS-TV. Last October, JSU took a 33-3 victory over Tennessee St. Wear your red and bring your spirit as the Gamecocks fight to cage the Tigers for another year.

At halftime, the Homecoming Queen and her court will be presented. There will also be a presentation of awards to this year's Outstanding Alumni. For information about the honorees, go to http://www.jsu.edu/news/july_dec2006/092906-alumni-awards.html .

After the game, the Marching Southerners and Ballerinas will present their entire show, "Yesterday, Today and Forever." Following this to end the day, the Black Alumni Chapter and Omega Psi Phi alumni have a party planned.
