Volunteers Needed for United Way Day of Caring

Extending the reach of the Friendliest Campus:

On Friday, August 18, JSU will again join about 30 other local companies in participating in the annual United Way Day of Caring, and volunteers are needed for this special outreach project.

This year’s team of community-minded JSU employees will perform much-needed maintenance at the Jacksonville Day Care Center, including cleaning and caulking gutters, replacing playground swing chains, replacing broken window panes, some exterior painting, and lots of yard maintenance such as mowing, weed-eating, tree trimming and general landscape cleaning. Supplies for the projects will be provided by JSU and/or the Day Care Center; however, volunteers will need to bring ladders (preferably extension-type), mowers, weed-eaters, trimmers and other equipment.

As in years past, breakfast and lunch will be provided, and Dr. Meehan has granted permission for volunteers to participate without using any of their annual leave.

Last year, more than 400 volunteers from throughout the county partnered with 29 non-profit agencies to actively improve our community. JSU’s team of 23 volunteers descended upon the All Saints Interfaith Center of Concern in Anniston, which provides direct relief to needy families. There, the volunteers scrubbed and painted the center’s entire interior, waxed floors, cleaned and organized several rooms of groceries and clothing, replaced roof shingles and cleaned up the grounds. While the volunteers worked, they also were able to see first-hand the impact of such agencies on the community.

“Last year, the JSU volunteer group was awarded the ‘Kitchens Caring Hand Award’ for service above and beyond the call, so the bar has been set high,” said team coordinator Joe Whitmore, director of the Office of Special Services.

“I am confident that this year’s group will be encouraged by last year’s recognition of JSU and will be excited to make a big impact at this year’s Day of Caring."

For more information or to volunteer to be on the JSU team, please contact Whitmore at ext. 8555 or e-mail him at whitmore@jsu.edu.
