Sunrise & Keyhole Sunset

Biology Department Head Frank Romano shot this sunrise before a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, above, during a NOAA National Marine Fishery Service research voyage with students last fall. Below is a keyhole sunset made in 2003. The third photo shows an enlargement of the keyhole effect. Dr. Romano, a former photojournalist, said the optical illusion can be photographed when the atmosphere is absolutely clear to the horizon.
