Campus Police to Host Bicycle Safety Course on Sept. 18

26 August 2004 -- The Calhoun Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will sponsor a free bicycle safety course in the training room of the University Police Department. The event, hosted by UPD, will be held from 8 a.m. until about noon and will be for all ages.

Proper bicycle maintenance will be taught, along with how to choose the proper bike and why it is important to fully understand the rules of the road.

Dr. Carlton Jones, a longtime advocate of using the bicycle as an alternate means of transportation, will teach. He endorses using the bicycle, too, for enjoyment.

“We are proud to have someone with the enthusiasm of Dr. Jones to teach this course,” said Sgt. Al Preuninger of UPD.

Dr. Jones is a safety instructor certification by the League of American Bicyclists. He also works closely with the Alabama Bicycle Coalition, called AlaBike, which is the state’s bicycle advocacy coalition. He has taught the course for the past two years. He will also inspect bicycles for anyone who brings theirs to class.
