Roswal Plays Significant Role in Promoting Heart-Healthy Lifestyle |
JACKSONVILLE -- June 27, 2001 --
Dr. Glenn Roswal of the JSU Department of Health, Physical Education and
Recreation recently spoke before the board of directors of the American
Heart Association. At the request of American Heart Association Executive
Vice President Gordon McCullough and CEO Cass Wheeler, Roswal spoke on the
role of education in fighting heart disease and stroke, our nation's number
one and three killers. As a part of his presentation, Roswal presented a check for $49 million, representing the funds raised this year through Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. The Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs are a partnership between the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and the American Heart Association designed to raise the level of awareness on the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle, while generating funds for heart research and for quality physical education programs. What started as a physical education project in Wisconsin 23 years ago has turned into one of the largest school site education fund development programs in the country. Through the partnership, over 5 million children participate each year, including approximately 1/3 of all elementary schools across the nation. The partnership has created educational kits that are given to schools participating in Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart events. These kits teach children: how to act in a cardiac emergency situation, how to recognize heart attack and stroke warning signs, and why it is so important to live a heart-healthy lifestyle. In its 23-year history, Jump Rope for Heart has raised $250 million. Roswal is the current President of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, a professional organization representing nearly 60,000 professionals. |
