Director of JSU English Language Institute Seeks Help from International Students in Recruiting

I am writing to ask you to help the new JSU English Language Institute (ELI) recruit students. The ELI is a non-credit institute set up by Jacksonville State to help students learn academic English. The classes will be geared toward students who have an interest in studying at universities and colleges in the United States. Stars of the Pharaohs Planetarium Program Jan. 8

Explore Ancient Egypt by becoming a time & space traveler during this exciting adventure program. Dr. Kelly Gregg, Physical and Earth Sciences Department, and JSU Field School’s Renee Morrison (as the zany explorer Dr. Darling) will be leading this program. Space Travelers will watch an exciting dome film that offers the participants the experience of feeling as though they are traveling through great pyramids and into mysterious tombs to discover what the ancient Egyptians saw in the nighttime skies. Pinhoti Trail Hike: Shoal Creek Jan. 22

Mountain streams, ravines, long-leaf pine stands, and incredible vistas . . . Join us for the first hike of the season along the Shoal Creek portion of Alabama’s longest hiking trail. Registration Fee Error Corrected

Due to an error, all students whose classes were confirmed on December 13 for Spring 2005 were charged a $30 late registration fee. The charges were removed from the accounts.

JSU Receives Good News from SACS

JSU recently received good news from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) at its December 2004 meeting in Atlanta. The commission accepted JSU's first monitoring report addressing seven recommendations with no additional reporting required. Dr. Meehan expressed his gratitude to those who contributed to writing the monitoring report, submitted in September 2004. In particular, Dr. Louise Clark, Dr. Joe Delap, and Mr. Tim Smith are acknowledged for their preparation of the final report. JSU's reaffirmation of accreditation by SACS in December 2004 extends to 2014, according to Dr. Rebecca O. Turner, vice president for academic and student affairs.

Online Parking Violations Appeal Procedure

The University Police Department would like to remind all faculty, staff, and students that effective January 1, 2005, all parking or moving violation appeals must be submitted online at police.jsu.edu. The University Police will no longer accept walk in appeals after December 31, 2004. If you have any questions, please contact Parking Services at 256-782-5835.

Alumni Affairs' Open House for Graduating Seniors Dec. 17

Alumni Affairs is hosting an open house with refreshments on Friday, December 17 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for all graduating seniors. Graduating seniors may choose to stop by the Alumni House after Graduation rehearsal. Please make reservations by calling 782-5404 so we may plan accordingly.

Physical Plant Correction to Memo on Heating
of Buildings during the Holidays

George Lord, Director of the Physical Plant, reports the following correction to the memo dated 12-6-04 sent to building managers. The building heat will not actually be turned off but "reduced" in temperature setting to protect the building and conserve energy which means real money!!!! Reducing the heat in empty buildings during the holidays can have a very significant benefit to the University's utilities budget—especially, since we were just notified of a potential 6% increase in electrical costs programmed for January 2005 by Alabama Power.

JSU Fall 2004 Commencement / Graduation Candidates

Fall commencement will be held in Pete Mathews Coliseum, Saturday, 18 December at 10:00 a.m. for candidates receiving degrees from the College of Education and Professional Studies and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and at 2:00 p.m. for candidates receiving degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Commerce and Business Administration. Distinguished graduates include Emily Noelle Padgett, of Rome, GA, who graduates with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Following close behind are Donna Mae Hairston, of Ft. Payne, AL, with a near perfect GPA of 3.99; Meredith Layne Toney, of Gadsden, AL, with a 3.97 GPA; Janis Presley Atkinson, of Steele, AL, with a 3.97 GPA; and Michael Pody, of Piedmont, AL, who also graduates with a 3.97 GPA. Greek Leaders Elected for 2005

JSU's Office of Student Life is very proud to announce the results from the most recent Greek elections. These new leaders will experience a great deal of leadership training in the spring semester. “The Workshop,” held from January 5 – 6, 2005 at the Alabama 4-H Center, will begin this leadership training. The leaders of our Greek community will outline goals for 2005 and develop our own Greek Life Mission Statement. JSU Offers New Course for All Jazz Enthusiasts

Jazz enthusiasts can now study their favorite music genre for college credit or simply for fun. Jacksonville State University instructor Kevin Mobbs will teach the new course, History of American Jazz, which includes the origins and development of jazz.  Registration is January 5 - 10 and the course begins January 10. Physicians' Hours at Student Health Center

Effective Wednesday, December 8, 2004, to December 17, 2004, the physicians' hours will be Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00-10:00 a.m. There will be no physician available after 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2004. JSU Staff Awards Luncheon Dec. 20

The Annual Staff Awards Luncheon will be held Monday, December 20 in the Leone Cole Auditorium. At this luncheon service pins will be awarded, individuals selected as the Employee of the Month will be recognized, and the Employer of the Year will be announced. University offices will be allowed to close at 11:30 a.m. and the Awards Program should start at 11:45 a.m. A buffet luncheon will be served following the presentation of the awards. Please be seated as soon as possible so that the program can begin on time.

Christmas Drive for Needy Kids in Guatemala

The JSU History Club and Phi Alpha Theta are sponsoring a drive to collect Christmas shoe boxes for delivery to needy kids in Guatemala. If you would like to participate in this charitable program you can make up a shoe box filled with items such as toys, school supplies, hygiene products, etc. Mark the top of the box with the appropriate age and sex of the child you would like to have gift delivered. Boxes will be collected until December 15 and delivered directly to Guatemala by truck. MORE >>>

JSU Peer Educators' "Arrive Alive in 2005" Program Underway

The Peer Educators have been busy placing signs, posters and banners around campus, and visiting classrooms asking faculty, staff, and students to sign the "Arrive Alive in 2005" pledge. Throughout the Southeast many college students do not return to their campuses after the winter break because of preventable accidents. Dr. John Hammett Named Associate Dean, Education & Professional Studies

Dr. John Hammett was named Associate Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies on November 18, 2004.
Dr. Cynthia Harper, Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies, said, "Dr. Hammett is an excellent choice for Associate Dean. He has a broad experiential and knowledge base in both education and professional studies programming. In addition to outstanding leadership qualities, Dr. Hammett has the energy level necessary to promote excellence throughout all areas served by the College."

Larry K. Martin's African Adventures Keep Getting More Fun   
JSU alumnus Larry K. Martin was leading a group of artists on a photographic safari at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, on the border at Kenya and Tanzania, when he suddenly spotted an angry-looking rogue elephant. Martin asked the guide driving the Land Rover to stop, and Martin began shooting a series of reference photos for a possible painting. Martin’s photographic images of the episode soon guided him in painting the encounter as an acrylic masterpiece titled He Sees Red. Martin, an internationally known wildlife artist, works with a younger generation of artists to help them in seeing and capturing reference images via professional-quality digital cameras. MORE >>>

Rogers Secures $60,000 for JSU training; $50,000 for Natural History Museum

Jacksonville State University should receive $60,000 to develop a training system for its advanced weather radar system and the Anniston Museum of Natural History should receive $50,000 to help improve its community outreach activities, Congressman Mike Rogers said today, as the House passed the Omnibus appropriations bill that helps complete its legislative activity for the 108th Congress. The funds, which appear in H.R. 4818, the Omnibus Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2005, passed the House today by a vote of 344-51. MORE >>>

Jacksonville State University behavioral psychologist Dr. Bill Palya is the go-to guy for horse sense. “People want to understand how to break horses, make them ride better, and create good carriage or work horses,” Palya said. “They also want their horses to behave well and be respectful around humans. It’s actually very easy to train horses to do all those things and anything else that they’re physically capable of doing. I also enjoy teaching people to train horses so they can experience the joy of well-behaved, responsive horses.” MORE >>>

Registration for Spring Semester 2005

It is time to register for classes for the spring semester 2005. Registration by telephone and internet only continues through Friday, November 5. Priority pre-registration begins on Monday November 8 at 8:00 a.m. At that time students may register on the telephone, on the internet or by going to the department of their major. Students must see their advisor prior to registering for classes. Registration will remain open until December 7. Tuition for students who pre-register is due by December 7.

Four Are Selected as Capital Campaign Co-Chairs

Jacksonville State University’s Campaign Office has announced four who are familiar to the university to chair its campaign to raise $17.5 million. They are Bob Kennamer and Randy Owen, who are on the board of trustees, and David Hale and Alex Baker, who are on the foundation board. MORE >>>

Beware of Internet Fraud

University students, faculty, and staff are currently being targeted by an internet “fishing scam”. Hackers are targeting university internet users by posing as legitimate businesses. Hackers are contacting internet users via e-mail posing as financial institutions or prominent businesses. In the e-mail to the internet user, the hacker requests that the recipient update their financial information online. The hackers use the information from the e-mail to draft financial assets and to set up fraudulent checks and credit cards.

Busy Student Writes Novel between Classes

A Jacksonville State University student who found himself too busy to pursue writing on a regular schedule completed his first published novel during spare time between classes. James Matthew Byers of Rainbow City is now busy with signings and other promotional efforts for Grecian Rune (PublishAmerica, 313 pages, November 2004), a fantasy tale set in Greece, Crete, China, and Egypt that tells the story of a collection of heroes, gods, and goddesses who joined forces to overcome evil. UPD Steps Up Decal Enforcement

The University Police Department is increasing their efforts to get everyone at JSU to register their vehicles. Officers have been forced to boot 14 vehicles in the last three weeks. Many students have failed to register for their decal this semester.  In an effort to motivate students to register their vehicles, the Chanticleer will begin printing the names of persons who are booted each week.  To avoid having your name on the boot list, register your vehicle online at police.jsu.edu. Wellness Center Offers Cholesterol Screenings

The Wellness Center is continuing to offer Cholesterol Screenings (Lipid Profiles) to all JSU Faculty, Staff, their dependents and Retirees on Tuesdays during the Fall Semester. All screenings are conducted in the Wellness Center (204 A Pete Mathews Coliseum). The screening is quick and easy and requires approximately 5 minutes of your time. MORE >>>

Zeta Tau Alpha Campaign for Breast Cancer Research

Zeta Tau Alpha and Yoplait are teaming up in an effort to raise 2.1 million dollars for breast cancer research. For every yogurt lid, 10 cents will go to help find a cure for breast cancer. A box for the lids will be placed on the 2nd floor of TMB. Lids will be collected now through the end of December.

JSU's 2004-05 Drama Season Tickets on Sale

Season passes are are on sale for Jacksonville State University's 2004-05 drama season. Five family-friendly shows are scheduled. They are Shakespeare's As You Like It; Ibsen's A Doll's House; a musical by Holmes, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens; a new play, Heroes by Muschell, winner of the 2004 Southern Playwright's Competition; and a comic fantasy, On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning.  A season pass includes one ticket to each of the above plays.  Cost of the passes are as follows:  Adults, $34.00; senior citizens and JSU personnel, $29.00; students and military, $24.00.  Passes may be purchased by calling 256-782-5648.  Mastercard, Visa, and Discover are accepted.
