Goal: 100 Percent Participation in Capital Campaign Why a Capital Campaign? Jacksonville State University is being challenged like never before to provide quality education to an increasingly diverse student body. Resources shrink more each year as enrollment pressures and faculty needs grow. JSU receives just 50.5% of its funding from state and federal sources. The institution must find additional sources of support. Private funds are essential. JSU's new Capital Campaign can meet these needs with your help. Why am I important to the Campaign? The goal for faculty and staff is 100 percent participation. Donors outside the institution will be greatly influenced by learning that JSU's faculty and staff — the people closest to the institution — have pledged their full support to the campaign.  Your contribution, at any level, is vital. How can I help? Soon, you will be given a pledge card. Please return it along with the payroll deduction form to the campaign office in Bibb Graves Hall. Gifts and pledge payments may be made through payroll deduction, personal check, gifts of stock, personal property, or appreciated property. Questions? JSU-Gadsden Director Appears on Letterman Show

Jacksonville State University's Ralph Burke, director of JSU-Gadsden, landed on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman recently when he was selected from a line outside a New York deli. Mr. Burke and his wife Linda were enjoying some free time near Rockefeller Center when they were asked to compete in a Letterman contest for a kitchen appliance. Letterman gave Mr. Burke 30 seconds to find the first reference to the name Monica in Bill Clinton's new book, My Life, with the index removed. The countdown and music began, and Mr. Burke flipped through the book furiously as deli owner Rupert Jee and Mr. Burke's wife looked on. Thirty seconds later he had lost the contest but was awarded consolation prizes of a tray of cold cuts and two T-shirts. "I've placed this in the category of the weirdest thing that ever happened to me," says Mr. Burke. MORE >>>

Federal Employment Workshop on Sept. 29

Career Placement Services will be hosting a Federal Employment Workshop on Wednesday, September 29th, at the Houston Cole Library beginning at 3:00 p.m. Timothy Grey, the Director of Personnel and Training at the Redstone Arsenal, will be leading the sessions to be held in the Library computer lab. In addition to providing students with valuable information about the benefits of Federal Employment, Mr. Grey will personally assist any students that wish to submit a Federal application online. Students that attend this workshop will have the opportunity to ask specific questions as they access the computers and complete the application process with step-by-step instruction. MORE >>>

New Jobs for JSU Students

Ten JSU students were recently hired into Fall co-op positions with Choice Fabricators, Inc. Two students are from the College of Business and eight are from the College of Technology. Job opportunities will range from Human Resources to Robotics and Quality Control. Choice Fabricators was established in Attalla, AL in 1981 and has grown to over 300 employees. They remain a privately owned company with customers that include Emerson Electric, General Electric, Maytag, and Whirlpool. JSU Sophomore to Compete in Miss Alabama Pageant

Jacksonville State University will have at least one representative in the Miss Alabama Pageant in June 2005. Deanna Dewberry, a sophomore from Valley, was recently crowned Miss Chatt, which stands for Chattahoochee. Miss Dewberry is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in special education. She is a transfer student from Southern Union and chose JSU because of its friendly student body and outstanding teaching program. She is a member of the Marching Ballerinas and Alpha Omicron Pi. Jacksonville City Candidate's Open Forum

Public Service Announcement: On August 12, 2004, at 6:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville Community Center, a debate style open forum will be held for the Mayoral, City Council and Board of Education candidates. The audience can present written questions for the candidates to answer through the moderator. It is your city and your election—please participate. Jacksonville City Candidate's Open Forum is presented by the Jacksonville Merchants Association.

Commencement Video Available Through Aug. 13

Jacksonville State University's first graduation ceremony broadcast via Internet streaming on 30 July was a success, according to Mike Hathcock, director of television and engineering in the Department of Television Services. The project was a test. Video streaming's future at JSU will be determined later and might include other types of programming. Graduates and others who want to watch the taped ceremony can go to www.jsu.edu and click on “Summer 2004 Graduation – Web Streaming Archive” through 13 August. MORE >>>

Alumna Emily Bonds Among 'Top 40 Under 40'

Jacksonville State University alumna Emily Bonds, class of 1987, was recognized in the Birmingham Business Journal publication 2004 Top 40 Under 40. Mrs. Bonds, who lives in Vestavia Hills, is a partner in the law firm of Walston Wells Anderson & Baines LLP. She is a member of the Jacksonville State University Alumni Association's board of governors, the Alpha Xi Delta Building Corp., and Brookwood Baptist Church. She is an active member of her church and has an interest in mission work in Birmingham. Mrs. Bonds, who holds a juris doctorate from the University of Alabama, says she got a taste of the field of law at age 14 by answering telephones at a law firm in Anniston.

Instructions for Purchasing Online Parking Decals

In an effort to better serve the campus community, the University Police Department has automated the procedure for purchasing parking decals.  The registration process is quick and easy.  Decals are now available for faculty, staff, and students at police.jsu.edu.  Online registration is mandatory for all JSU faculty, staff, and students.  Persons requesting a JSU handicap decal must register for their blue or red decal online before applying for their JSU handicap parking permit at the University Police Department.  MORE >>>

UPD Offers Workshop on Security Devices

The University Police Department invites all Budget Managers, Building Managers, and Deans to the Houston Cole Library on August 13, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. to attend a workshop on security devices. The University Police Department will have a representative from Benham Security on campus to demonstrate several of the newest physical security devices that are on the market. MORE >>>

Online Vehicle Registration August 1st

In an effort to better serve the campus community, the University Police Department has automated the procedure for purchasing parking decals.  The registration process is quick and easy.  Beginning August 1, 2004, faculty, staff, and students must register online at police.jsu.edu.  Online registration is mandatory for all JSU faculty, staff, and students.  The University Police will continue to register faculty, staff, and students requiring a JSU handicap decal at UPD. Montana Rockies Rail Tour Sponsored by JSU Alumni Office

The Alumni Office is offering the Montana Rockies rail tour — three days’ travel on board a steam locomotive during a fall foliage trip 9 – 15 October 2004. The package includes a welcome orientation, six nights' lodging, travel on the train — including daily onboard lunch, guides and narrators, continental breakfasts and non-alcoholic beverages. Photo opportunities will include the historic Livingston Depot Center; Cody, Wyoming; Buffalo Bill Historical Center; and Yellowstone National Park with lunch at Old Faithful Inn. The price per person depends on accommodations: double–$1950, single–$2350. Price includes the excursion and round-trip airfare from Atlanta, Georgia. UA Profs Contribute to JSU's Books for Baghdad Project

Professors from the University of Alabama delivered their first shipment of textbooks to Jacksonville State University for the Books for Baghdad program Friday afternoon. Included in the shipment was a complete set of journals from the American Chemical Society. The more than 500 books valued at $10,000 were all from UA's Chemistry Department. Other professors in other departments at UA are in the process of gathering books. MORE >>>

Professor's 'Books for Baghdad' in National Spotlight

A project started by Jacksonville State University's Dr. Safaa Al-Hamdani to collect textbooks for Baghdad University has attracted the attention of National Public Radio, NBC, FOX, ABC, the Associated Press and other media outlets. SGA Involvement Meeting Sept. 15th

Attention all Students who want to be involved. SGA Involvement Meeting is to be held at 6:00 p.m., September 15th in the TMB 3rd Floor Auditorium. The SGA Involvement Meeting is for all students who want to become actively involved in the SGA. This meeting will describe all of the committees that students can get involved with and will give the students a chance to see what's available for them.
