Goal: 100 Percent Participation in Capital Campaign Why a Capital Campaign? Jacksonville State University is being challenged like never before to provide quality education to an increasingly diverse student body. Resources shrink more each year as enrollment pressures and faculty needs grow. JSU receives just 50.5% of its funding from state and federal sources. The institution must find additional sources of support. Private funds are essential. JSU's new Capital Campaign can meet these needs with your help. Why am I important to the Campaign? The goal for faculty and staff is 100 percent participation. Donors outside the institution will be greatly influenced by learning that JSU's faculty and staff — the people closest to the institution — have pledged their full support to the campaign.  Your contribution, at any level, is vital. How can I help? Soon, you will be given a pledge card. Please return it along with the payroll deduction form to the campaign office in Bibb Graves Hall. Online Vehicle Registration August 1st

In an effort to better serve the campus community, the University Police Department has automated the procedure for purchasing parking decals.  The registration process is quick and easy.  Beginning August 1, 2004, faculty, staff, and students must register online at police.jsu.edu.  Online registration is mandatory for all JSU faculty, staff, and students.  The University Police will continue to register faculty, staff, and students requiring a JSU handicap decal at UPD. Montana Rockies Rail Tour Sponsored by JSU Alumni Office

The Alumni Office is offering the Montana Rockies rail tour — three days’ travel on board a steam locomotive during a fall foliage trip 9 – 15 October 2004. The package includes a welcome orientation, six nights' lodging, travel on the train — including daily onboard lunch, guides and narrators, continental breakfasts and non-alcoholic beverages. Photo opportunities will include the historic Livingston Depot Center; Cody, Wyo.; Buffalo Bill Historical Center; and Yellowstone National Park with lunch at Old Faithful Inn. The price per person depends on accommodations: double–$1950, single–$2350. Price includes the excursion and round-trip airfare from Atlanta, Ga. Col. Wilson Donates Collection of Emerson's Works to Library

Local Emerson scholar, Col. Douglas Wilson, donated a copy of Volume VI
of The Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Conduct of Life, to Houston Cole Library.  Col. Wilson is the general editor and textual editor of this definitive collection of Emerson's works published by Harvard University Press.  The complete series will comprise ten volumes.  Col. Wilson also serves on the Friends of Houston Cole Library Board of Directors. MORE >>>

Community Responds to Coach Gary DeBoy's Time of Need

Community spirit is helping former Jacksonville State University Rifle Coach Gary DeBoy, who suffered a spinal cord injury in a fall at his home that left him unable to walk or use his hands. Volunteers who pitched in to build a 500-square-foot addition to the DeBoy home included friends from Westside Baptist Church and JSU along with even a few strangers who felt moved to help. MORE >>>

JSU to Webcast Commencement

For the first time, family and friends can view Jacksonville State University's graduation live from their home computers. Streaming video via the University's Web site (http://www.jsu.edu) will broadcast graduates marching across the stage for diplomas at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 30 at Paul Snow Stadium. A link to the live ceremony will be available on the University's home page on graduation day. The event also may be viewed live on WJXS-TV 24 (local CableOne Channel 9). Other cable companies that carry TV 24 include CableOne (Anniston, Oxford, Munford and Jacksonville); Charter (Piedmont, Southside and Heflin); Leesburg Cable; Collinsville Cable; Lookout Cable (Gaylesville); and Cherokee County Cable (Centre).

JSU to Sell Surplus Property

Jacksonville State University will accept sealed bids for surplus property, which can be viewed July 27 through August 2 at the JSU Warehouse, Mason Hall, and Paul Snow Stadium. Bids will be opened at 10 a.m. August 3 in JSU's purchasing office in 103 Bibb Graves Hall. Items for sale include computers, pianos, lockers, furniture, and scrap metal. UPD's On-line Parking Decal Registration System Update

The University Police Department's on-line parking decal registration system will be available beginning 1 August 2004 at http://www.jsu.edu. The system has been modified to allow persons with Jacksonville State University Tags (J-Tags) to register their vehicles online without having to select the payroll deduction option. This modification was made to streamline the registration process.

Modification to On-line Registration Process for Parking Permits

The University Police Department issued the following announcement: The on-line registration process for parking permits is currently being modified to allow persons with Jacksonville State University license plates to register their vehicles without having to select payroll deduction.

Theron Montgomery III To Have First Book Published

Dr. Theron Montgomery III, a Jacksonville native and alumnus of Jacksonville State University, has had his first book of short stories accepted for publication by United Kingdom Artists in England. The book will also be promoted in the United States and will be titled The Procession and Other Stories. It is due out this spring. MORE >>>

UA Profs Contribute to JSU's Books for Baghdad Project

Professors from the University of Alabama delivered their first shipment of textbooks to Jacksonville State University for the Books for Baghdad program Friday afternoon. Included in the shipment was a complete set of journals from the American Chemical Society. The more than 500 books valued at $10,000 were all from UA's Chemistry Department. Other professors in other departments at UA are in the process of gathering books. MORE >>>

JSU Students Interview for Co-Op Positions

Seventeen JSU students were interviewed in the Career Placement Office on July 8 for co-op positions with Choice Fabricators, Inc. Julie Chadwick, the Business and Operations Manager, conducted successful on-campus interviews for openings in both Business and Technology. The second round of interviews will be held at the company's main facility in Rainbow City during the last week of July. Dr. Harper Named Dean of Education and Professional Studies

Dr. Cynthia Harper was recently elevated from acting dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies to dean of that program. The College of Education and Professional Studies is one of JSU's largest, with 34% of the JSU population. In addition to teacher training, the College includes several professional studies programs including technology, engineering, communication, and family and consumer sciences. MORE >>>

Professor's 'Books for Baghdad' in National Spotlight

A project started by Jacksonville State University's Dr. Safaa Al-Hamdani to collect textbooks for Baghdad University has attracted the attention of National Public Radio, NBC, FOX, ABC, the Associated Press and other media outlets. Joe Serviss Earns CFRE Credential

CFRE International of Alexandria, Virginia, awarded Jacksonville State University’s Joseph A. Serviss the certified fund raising executive (CFRE) credential after Mr. Serviss passed the organization’s national examination in April. CFRE International offers the only internationally-recognized baseline professional credential for philanthropic fundraising executives. Major Development Made in Attracting Arts Programs to McClellan

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra has announced its decision to make Calhoun County’s former Fort McClellan its permanent summer home. Kicking off this new relationship, the Joint Powers Authority (JPA), which is responsible for the reuse of the old military base, created an outdoor concert series known as Music at McClellan. Four recent concerts were recently presented for varying musical tastes. The series, which attracted about 6,500 fans, has triggered a much larger interest in developing the arts at McClellan. Officials are now discussing an expansion that would include a multifaceted cultural program involving the performing arts, visual arts, architectural arts, literary arts, and more. MORE >>>

Social Work Program Reaccredited for Eight Years

The National Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) reaccredited Jacksonville State University’s Social Work Program. Three JSU Students Selected for LEI

Three Jacksonville State University students were selected to attend The Leading Edge Institute (LEI), a unique leadership development program for young women across the state of Alabama. The three JSU students were Krystle Bell, Allison Crow, and Alison Pierce. These women attended LEI's Summer Institute during the week of June 13 - 19, 2004. This leadership development program provided young women from across the state a glimpse of what areas for improvement are found in Alabama. They also learned what women are currently doing to make Alabama a better place to live. They formed contacts from across Alabama. LEI does not end with this one-week program. The women will continue working with LEI through individual projects and the LEI mentoring program. Celebrations of their accomplishments take place through the Fall Connection and Winter Summit. This is an announcement regarding nursing classes which will be offered in Fall 2004 that are not in the JSU Fall Class Schedule Book. JSU Foundation Implements New Software

The JSU Foundation is currently implementing new software that will affect account managers in processing their transactions. New account numbers are being assigned by the JSU Foundation office for reporting purposes. Part of these new account numbers will include the ability to allocate income and expenses based on the type of transaction similar to the object codes used by JSU. Check requests will need to be submitted with just one payee per request; multiple vendors can not be processed on the same form. Monthly statements that are sent to account managers will be different. MORE >>>

Learning to use the library is an essential life-long learning tool. Both information technologies and library literacy will continue to play a dominant role in the educational, career, and world experiences of our students. Security System Helps ID Thief

In the early morning hours of June 4, 2004, a person entered the JSU International House and took a 52” Sony Plasma Screen Television valued at $7200.00. Within hours of a burglary, university police officers had identified and arrested the perpetrator and recovered the stolen television. The crime was reported to the University Police at 9:30 a.m. on June 4, 2004. Officers met with Dr. John Ketterer who provided officers with access to their newly installed Digital Video Recording System. The security system pictures showed the male suspect entering the International House and then leaving with the television. The pictures were e-mailed and printed from the digital security system and a positive ID was made a few minutes thereafter. The suspect was identified and apprehended within 6 hours of the incident being reported to the police. The security system was key in the rapid identification and arrest of the thief. With this one incident, the digital security system paid for itself.

If any building managers are interested on campus, I would be happy to show them the demo digital video recorder that we have installed at Salls House. We are currently testing and evaluating the March Networks 4310. The March Network 4310 will support 16 cameras, motion detection, alarm interface, and much more. The following items have been inventoried and are available now to be relocated for use by JSU departments and offices on campus.

• 3 rectangular tables (not large)
• 1 round table (4-foot diameter, blonde)
• 1 glass display case - glass both ends and front, 20 inches deep, 6 feet long, 3 feet high & lighted
• 1 10-foot conference table has been reassigned/relocated - no longer available

Legislature Concludes 2004 Regular Session — What is Next?

The Alabama Legislature has concluded its work on the 2004 Regular Session and the Higher Education Partnership congratulates the leaders for passing the budgets.  Finding sufficient dollars to pass the General Fund and Education Trust Fund Budgets was significant.  However, the limited amount of available revenue means that the education budget only provides enough funding to allow most of the state’s K–Ph.D. programs to maintain status quo. Summer Student Employment Opportunities

The National Park Service is currently seeking applicants for summer employment at the Little River Canyon National Preserve, home of Jacksonville State University's Little River Canyon Field School. The positions of fee collector and maintenance worker are open to qualified university students who have been enrolled during Spring Term and are registered to be enrolled in the upcoming Fall Term. Both are full time positions and pay $10 per hour. Applicants must be US citizens. These positions are excellent, entry level opportunities for National Park Service employment. Find Cheapest Gas Prices in Jacksonville, Nationwide

The following is intended to help students and employees find the lowest gasoline prices. Since gasoline prices change frequently and may vary by as much as 20 percent within only a few blocks, it is important to be able to locate the service station with the lowest priced fuel. Alabama Gas Prices web site allows consumers to both share information about low priced fuel with others as well as target the lowest priced stations to save at the pumps. After registering as a member (a free service), you can enter the members area and search for the lowest prices in your vicinity. You can also report the price of gasoline in your area in order to help others find the best deals. (From Al Harris)

SGA Involvement Meeting Sept. 15th

Attention all Students who want to be involved. SGA Involvement Meeting is to be held at 6:00 p.m., September 15th in the TMB 3rd Floor Auditorium. The SGA Involvement Meeting is for all students who want to become actively involved in the SGA. This meeting will describe all of the committees that students can get involved with and will give the students a chance to see what's available for them. Annual Faculty Awards Presentation

The annual Faculty Recognition reception was held May 17 in the Houston Cole Library. Ms. Donna Hey, Department of Health, PE & Recreation, received the Earlon & Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Kelly Gregg, Department of Physical and Earth Sciences, received the Cleo and Carla Thomas Award for Outstanding Community Education & Service.
