Two Revisions to Online Business Procedures Manual

The online Business Procedures Manual has had two revisions made to it.  Procedure IV:03:06 has been revised.  Form #100 (Payroll Action Form) has been added and Form #20 (Professional Services Contract) has been revised.  If you are keeping a hard copy manual, please make these changes to keep it up-to-date.

JSU Hosts Its Third Annual Language Arts Olympiad

The Jacksonville State University Writing Project hosted 270 middle school students in grades 5-8 at Stone Center on Thursday, April 29, 2004, for its annual Language Arts Olympiad. Students competed in areas such as literature, grammar, spelling, public speaking, and essay writing in both individual and team events. At the end of the day’s events, an awards ceremony in the Stone Center Theatre recognized first, second, and third place winners in each event by presenting these students Olympic style gold, silver, and bronze medals. In addition, the top five schools at each level (5-6 and 7-8) received overall trophies. The overall winner for grades 5-6 was Kitty Stone Elementary School School; for grades 7-8, the overall winner was Centre Middle School. MORE >>>

JSU, AAD Sponsoring Trade Fair May 6

Jacksonville State University's  Small Business Development Center and Anniston Army Depot will offer a seminar, Business Opportunities 2004 Conference and Trade Fair, from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 6, at Stephenson Hall on the JSU campus.  The seminar is presented to assist small businesses in selling their products and services to the government. Over eighty companies will be displaying their products and distributing information about their company and product lines. MORE >>>

The University Police Department will be conducting a Click It or Ticket Campaign this month.  Chief Schneider and the University Police want to remind all faculty, staff, and students to buckle up.  It's the law. Chris Cook Receives NIC Award of Distinction

On April 25, 2004, JSU student, William Christopher Cook received national recognition at the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) Awards Banquet in Washington, D.C. for his outstanding achievements as a fraternity man. Along with only six other men across the country, Chris was honored with the Award of Distinction for an Undergraduate Student. Chris is the first member of Kappa Alpha Order, nationally, to receive the award and the first Jacksonville State University student to ever reach this honor. MORE >>>

Let's Go Canoeing!

What could be more fun than paddling down Terrapin Creek in the Spring Time? We'll provide the canoes, or sit-atop kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and instruction for a fun-filled day of sights, sounds, and splashes. This event is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 but is subject to change due to water levels. Plan to meet at JSU Martin Hall on May 15 at 8:00 a.m. to board the JSU van to Terrapin Creek. Wear shoes and clothes that you can get wet and dirty. Bring towels, lunch, and water. You also may want to bring waterproof bags or a cooler that seals. Pre-registration by May 13 is required. Opera Returns to JSU May 27-28

After more than a 15-year absence, opera will return to Jacksonville State University at 7 p.m. on May 27 and 28 when the David L. Walters Department of Music presents two one-act operas in Stone Center Theater. Each opera lasts about 30 minutes. Admission is free, and no reservations are necessary. Dr. Nathan Wight is director of the operas. He is JSU's assistant professor of voice and has experience in opera performance. "I've performed opera with Houston Grand Opera in Houston, Texas, and in the Sante Fe Opera Apprentice Program," he said. "I've also performed in the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, and in Edinburg Festival in Scotland." Budget Manager Training May 6

The Office of Human Resources is coordinating a budget manager training and business procedures update from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 6 on the 11th floor of Cole Library.  This is an opportunity for budget managers to be informed of changes in business policies, ask questions, and clarify procedures.  The areas that will be represented are: human resources, mail center, comptroller, purchasing, physical plant, special services, and institutional effectiveness.  The session will begin at 8:30 and will end at approximately noon.  For more information contact Karen Davis at kdavis@jsu.edu or at Ext. 5007.

Feature: Atkins Diet Popular at JSU

Jacksonville State University psychology professor Claudia McDade has been eating the Atkins way for the past 30 years, starting when she developed hypoglycemia in her twenties. The diet is a high protein, low carbohydrate, weight-loss program that claims to increase energy, help people lose weight, and eradicate several illnesses. McDade said she feels better on the diet and believes it helps her avoid diabetes. "It's been my preventive," she said. The diet is so popular it apparently inspires criminal behavior, giving new meaning to "let's rustle up some supper."  Several law enforcement officers think it is responsible for cattle rustling.   Rural investigators told The Washington Post in April that cattle theft is on the rise due to low-carb dieters' demand for protein. Oddly, there has been no similar rise in chicken or fish thefts. MORE>>>

Hopper Dining Hall Hours

Next Tuesday, April 27, is Hopper Dining Hall's last day of normal operating hours for the regular semester. Beginning Wednesday, April 28, the facility will be open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. until summer hours begin with May Term. The Food Court will be closed. For further information, call ext. 8123.

Education Fund Established for Mencer Children

An Education Trust Fund has been established at SouthTrust Bank for the children of Reggie Mencer.  The fund was set up to aid his wife Lori (a JSU employee) with the upcoming education cost of the four children:  Reggie, Jr., Joey, Elijah and Regina.  The funds can only be used for college education expenses for the children. Said Mark Jones, "Those of you who knew Reggie can attest to the fact that he was a very strong, loving, caring and special person.  If you would like to make a donation to the fund, just stop by any SouthTrust Bank and make donations to the the 'Mencer Children Fund.'"

Recycle Old Phone Books When New Ones Arrive

In conjunction with Earth Day, the JSU Geography Club and the JSU Telephone Center are asking everyone to recycle their 2003-2004 Calhoun County phone books by placing them in Campus Mail.  The Mail Center has agreed to collect the phone books for us.  The Geography Club will recycle them at the local recycling center in Anniston. The 2004-2005 Calhoun County phone books will be delivered to offices within the next week. For more information contact Mary MacArgel at Ext. 5990.

Print Shop Announces Slight Increase in Prices

Due to the costs of replacing outdated equipment and an increase in the cost of paper and other supplies, the Print Shop has announced a small increase in prices effective October 1. Advance notice of the change is being given to provide time for campus offices to adjust their printing budgets for the fall. This marks the first increase in several years. MORE>>>

Campus Physician's Summer Schedule

Effective Wednesday, April 21, 2004, the campus physician will begin his summer schedule. The physician will be available for appointments on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00-10:00 am. Please call ext. 5310 to schedule an appointment.
