HPER Outstanding Alumna & Alumnus 2007

The Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department of Jacksonville State University is proud to announce Jerry B. Simmons as the Outstanding Alumna of 2007 & Terry “Shaky” Hodges as the Outstanding Alumnus of 2007.



Jerry B. Simmons - Outstanding Alumna 2007


Jerry graduated from JSU in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in Physical Education and is presently teaching Physical Education at Weaver Elementary School in Weaver, Alabama.

She has been inducted into the 1999 JSU Hall of Fame, awarded Teacher of the Month and the Pilot school for the State of Alabama Grant. For the past two years, she has received the Jump Rope for Heart Grant.

Her related professional experience includes coaching girls’ gymnastics, volleyball, softball, basketball and track & field.

Jerry has sponsored the Flippers and Jumpers since 2002, which is a demo team for the American Heart Association. The team has performed at the ASAHPERD conference the past two years. Last year, the team had 28 performances at 14 schools. Jerry also finds the time to volunteer for the American Cancer Society, MS Foundation, Senior Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, and PTO committees.

Jerry is the proud mother of Leigh Twigg and Tripp Farrell and grandmother of Lainey, Marshall and Hayes.


Terry “Shaky” Hodges - Outstanding Alumnus 2007


Terry graduated from JSU in 1950 where he played football for four years. In 1982 he was selected as one of the 100 greatest athletes in the first 100 years of JSU and in 1989 was inducted into the JSU Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2003 he was selected to the All Century Football Team.

During his coaching career, he was head football coach at Hokes Bluff High School and Florala, AL. He moved to Tucker High School where his overall record was 77-22. He was selected Coach of the Year in 1957 and 1963 and won three regional championships. He then moved into administration in the county office as coordinator of athletics and physical education for 14 years and then retired.

He is married to the former Doris Gray of Talladega, AL.

The HPER department at JSU would like to congratulate both Jerry and Shaky on their many accomplishments and contributions in the field. They have represented our department and JSU extremely well.

The award ceremony is at the JSU vs Southeastern Missouri basketball game during half time. The game is at Pete Mathews Coliseum on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.
