THEN & NOW

Calhoun County Courthouse

The Calhoun County Chourthouse has gone through many transformations. The original courthouse was in Jacksonville, then the county seat. This view was shot in May, 2005. (Al Harris Photo)

Late 1800s, Jacksonville. The courthouse (Jacksonville's second; the first was torn down because it was too small) is facing north and located near St. Luke's Episcopal Church on property now used by the police department. (Photo: Anniston-Calhoun County Public Library, Alabama Room archives.)

Late 1800s view of the courthouse (left); the front of the building is facing north. Behind the courthouse, near the center of photo, is the spire of the Baptist Church, which later became the First Baptist Church and moved further north on Church Street. At right is the Allegheny Iron Queen Hotel, which was eventually used as a dormitory for the Normal School, which was headquartered (offices and classrooms) in the courthouse.
