How Does HIPAA Apply to Higher Education?

April 28, 2004 -- The Office of Human Resources will sponsor a two-hour workshop on HIPAA regulations as they apply to higher education. Dana Thrasher, an attorney with Constangy, Brooks & Smith, will speak on Monday, May 3, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon in Room 303 of the Theron Montgomery Building.

Recently this office received an inquiry on the impact of privacy issues surrounding health records as addressed in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and JSU's responsibility for proper handling of this private information. We recognize this as a subject that touches many areas on campus where employees', students', and in some cases community members' health information is available to our faculty and staff members in the course of their employment.

We have identified the following departments on campus that may be interested:

Academic Areas

  • College of Nursing and Health Sciences
  • Criminal Justice
  • Social Work
  • Wellness Center
Non-Academic Areas

  • Athletic Training
  • Counseling and Career Services
  • Disability Support Services
  • Human Resources
  • Multicultural Services
  • Nursing Clinic
  • Registrar's Office
  • Student Health Center
While this is not an all-inclusive list, it is a recommendation. Others are welcome to attend.

Please call 5007 to register for the workshop by Noon on Friday, April 30. For more information contact Judy Harrison, Human Resources, at harrison@jsu.edu or at Ext. 8569.
