JSU's Conroy and Interior Secretary Norton Interviewed by US Senator Sessions |
May 12, 2003 -- The most recent edition of "In Session with Jeff Sessions," the senator's half hour monthly public affairs show, features JSU's Environmental Policy and Information Center director, Pete Conroy, and Secretary of the Interior Gail Norton. Sessions stated that he was pleased "to have two special guests to discuss conservation and the environment," in the program which is broken into two 15-minute segments, starting with Secretary Norton and ending with Conroy. "It was an honor to have been invited by the Senator to spend time with the Secretary to discuss so many important conservation issues" said Conroy. The tape was recorded on April 9th in the US Capitol's Senate recording studio and has since been distributed to nearly forty cable systems throughout Alabama. Some of the topics discussed include the National Wildlife Refuge system, the Little River Canyon National Preserve, eastern and western attitudes towards publicly owned land, oil drilling in Alaska, economic development through ecotourism, the Endangered Species Act, Alabama's Forever Wild land acquisition program, as well as the nation's Land and Water Conservation Fund. "We just scratched the surface. I would have enjoyed time for another segment and maybe a little debate or back and forth with the Secretary," said Conroy. "Regardless, I was particularly pleased to have time for all three of us to discuss the nation's newest National Wildlife Refuge the Mountain Longleaf," said Conroy. According to Conroy, Senator Sessions has taken the lead in establishing the Mountain Longleaf NWR, the Cahaba River NWR and also the Dugger Mountain Wilderness. "Folks who care about conservation will enjoy this show," he concluded. The program will aired on local cable channel 53 on Tuesday, May 13 at 8:00 p.m. and also on TV-24 at a time and date to be announced. |
