JACKSONVILLE -- June 3, 2002 --
Dr. Brenda Phillips, professor of emergency management at Jacksonville
State University, addresses
the National Weather Service in Kansas City on June 4 on outreach
strategies for improving warnings to underserved populations
including the elderly, persons with disabilities, the deaf and hard of
hearing,
and women and children.
The meeting was part of a National Weather Service
effort to develop action plans that better serve underrepresented groups,
including efforts to increase women and minorities in the profession of
meteorology.
Dr. Phillips has 20 years of research and teaching expertise
in working with underserved populations in disasters and mass emergencies.
