Faculty Senate To Host |
JACKSONVILLE -- March 14, 2002 --
Jacksonville State University's Faculty Senate, the Higher Education
Partnership, and the Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform will host a
constitutional reform seminar at 3 p.m. Monday, April 1 in the Houston Cole
Library. The focus of the seminar will be the history of the 1901 Alabama Constitution, the document's effect on education and other functions of state government, and the methods for change. Dr. Bailey Thomson, associate professor of journalism at the University of Alabama and coordinator of the department's graduate studies, will be leading the seminar. Dr. Thomson is a former associate editor of the Mobile Register. In 1994 he directed a special investigation of Alabama's antiquated constitution, titled "Sin of the Fathers." For that work, Thomson and two colleagues were finalists for the Pulitizer Prize. Thomson helped organize Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform, which has become a leading advocate for better government in the state. JSU's seminar is part of a series of seminars being conducted around the state on constitutional reform. Gordon Stone, executive director of the Higher Education Partnership, said, "These seminars are just one part of many steps being taken ... to help generate long-term [education] funding solutions." The JSU seminar is open to the public. |
