English Dept. Lecture Series Features Lecture by Dr. Carmine DiBiase |
JACKSONVILLE -- February 8, 2002 --
The English Department Lecture Series will host a lecture by Dr. Carmine DiBiase, associate
professor of English, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 18. The Lecture is titled “James Joyce’s Triestine Friend: Italo Sveno in Letters and Diaries.” One of James Joyce’s greatest contributions to literature was his discovery of Italo Svevo, whom he befriended and whose novels he helped to make known throughout Europe. Along with Joyce, Marcel Proust, and Robert Musil, Svevo is considered to be among the greatest modern novelists. All three of his novels are available in English translations, two of them in very recent ones that appeared just months ago. His diaries, however, and his letters, which form a fascinating chronicle of his interior life, are not yet available in English. Dr. DiBiase is translating these documents, along with the diaries of Svevo’s daughter and his younger brother. His presentation will offer a reading of selected passages from all of these documents, and a virtual tour of the Trieste Museo Sveviano (or Svevo Museum). The public is invited to this free event, to be held in room 1103-A of Houston Cole Library on the campus of Jacksonville State University.
