Proration Update |
JACKSONVILLE -- March 15, 2001 --
University presidents are uniting in an effort to end the proration crisis by asking the Governor and
legislature to do away with portions of more than $200 million in state tax exemptions or to increase
sales tax on such items as beer, soft drinks and cigarettes. In other news, the Alabama Supreme Court yesterday refused to order the Governor to apply state budget cuts equally to K-12 schools and higher education. But the Governor’s press secretary said Siegelman is trying to come up with a solution to the $266 million shortfall in this year’s $4.3 billion education budget. “It needs to get out of court and the quicker the better,” said the spokesman. |
