JACKSONVILLE -- March 5, 2001 --
JSU is still operating under 6.2 percent proration after the Special
Session of the Legislature. The budget cut could go as high as 12 percent
if the Alabama Supreme Court rules against higher education.
The governor has said he will use the attorney general's opinion announced
last week -- that K-12 funding is an essential service and cannot be cut --
to further reduce higher education's share of the budget. If this happens,
public universities will challenge the governor in court. Please spend as
little as possible, as the budget fight may be a long one.
