Tie on some flies, rap a cliff and track a warbler…sound like fun? Try
Jacksonville State University’s Little River Canyon Field School! Since 1991, the JSU Little River Canyon Field School has been one of Alabama’s most exciting environmental education resources. This year, the Field School celebrates its tenth anniversary by adding more programs for a wider variety of audiences. The 70-plus programs scheduled for the year include archaeology digs, birding, fly-fishing, canoeing, medicinal plants, edible plants, nature camps for children, rock climbing, several different types of hikes, and much more! Over 30 of the programs are presented for no charge at the DeSoto State Park Campground during summer and fall weekends. The Field School also customizes natural and cultural history programs for schools, churches, scouts, civic organizations, and home-schoolers. Events through April include: Canyon Hike, Little River Canyon March 10, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. 8 miles, moderately strenuous $20.00 per person Stars of Little River Canyon DeSoto State Park Nature Center March 16, 7:00-9:00 p.m. $5.00 per person Frog Pond Adventure Calhoun County’s Frog Pond With Dr. “Frog” Cline March 17, 7:30-9:30 p.m. $3.00 per person Birding with Ben Brown Frog Pond March 31, 6:00-10:00 a.m. $5.00 per person Edible Plants of Little River Canyon With J.T. Dabbs March 31, 9:00 a.m.-noon $10.00 per person Seniors’ Hike for Health DeSoto State Park Nature Center April 4, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. $10.00 per person All programs require registration.
