JSU Professors Share Teaching Methods in Germany

07/01/2016

Dr. Linda Johnston, a JSU alumna and adjunct in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, recently conducted a seminar on exceptional learners and special education at Ludwigsburg University in Germany.

Located 100 miles south of Frankfurt in the baroque city of Ludwigsburg, the University of Ludwigsburg is a teaching institution focused on educational science in research and teaching.

The JSU-led seminar included an overview of exceptional learners and the process of special education in the U.S. as compared to Germany. A strong emphasis was placed on accessibility and inclusion for students with a diagnosed disability into the general education curriculum. On June 10, Dr. Larry Beard, a professor in the JSU Department of Curriculum and Instruction, joined Dr. Johnston via skype, presenting an in-depth session on assistive technology.

Both Beard and Johnston work with local education agencies in the US to conduct assessments and provide professional development for educators. They have co-authored a textbook published by Pearson entitled, “Assistive Technology: Access for All Students.”
