Annual Gamecock Gallop 5K Set for October 27

10/16/2012

JSU’s Wellness Center will hold its 12th Annual Gamecock Gallop 5K event on October 27, 2012 at 8 a.m. beginning at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The Gamecock Gallop is a 3.1 mile walk or run through JSU’s campus and the city square.  This 5K is the second largest in the area.  It is well attended by the community and it is hoped that participation from the JSU community will be equally strong this year.  All faculty, staff and students are invited to run or walk the Gamecock Gallop for a pre-registration discount price of $16. Of course, race day registration is permitted at the cost of $20.

As in previous years, each department is challenged to register as many participants as possible.  There are two JSU awards given every year.  One award is given to the department with the highest percentage of participants and another is given to the department with the greatest number of participants.  The Houston Cole Library has held both awards since 2009.  The Library has won the “highest percentage” award since its inception.  The Department of Military Science won the “greatest number of participants” award from 2001 through 2008, but was dethroned by the Library in 2009.  Which department will dethrone the reigning champions?  Encourage department colleagues to participate this year!  Walk or run, just join the fun!

If participating in the event isn’t appealing, there are many opportunities to volunteer.  Being the second largest race around takes A LOT of volunteers to secure safety and problem-free experiences for the participants.  Please contact the JSU Wellness Center ASAP for more information on being a volunteer, either individually or as a group.  All those who volunteer or participate receive a t-shirt.  And the participants have a chance to win door prizes from many area merchants including Strut’s, The Willow Tree, Top of the River, and Stoney Brook Golf Course, to name a few.

Please consider joining us at this event.  For more information, contact Gina Mabrey, race director, in the JSU Wellness Center at ext. 5114.
