March 6, 2020

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

As the administration continues to keep a close watch on the Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), I am pleased to announce that biosecurity expert Dr. Jeff Ryan, Professor of Emergency Management, has agreed to lead our efforts as we continue to plan, prepare and potentially respond to this developing issue.

Dr. Ryan has authored textbooks on hazard mitigation, pandemic preparedness and biosecurity. The retired Army Lieutenant Colonel spent more than 20 years in the military working in preventative medicine before arriving at JSU in 2005. We are fortunate to have him serve JSU during this time, just as we depended upon his expertise in the wake of the March 2018 tornado.

The university is continuously monitoring the spread of COVID-19 and following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Alabama Department of Public Health, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and other authorities.

There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Alabama, but we encourage faculty, staff and students to please make every effort to stay healthy and safe. Please follow best practices in preventing the spread of viruses, including:

• Covering Your Cough
• Washing Your Hands
• Staying Home When Sick
• Cleaning Your Cellphone

Please refer to the university’s coronavirus website for more information and updates. While there is much uncertainty with this evolving health crisis, you can rest assured that the university will do everything in its power to keep the JSU family safe.

Thank you,

Dr. Don Killingsworth, Jr.
Acting President
