When can I start at DISL?

  • DISL classes are only offered in the Summer
  • You need to take 16 hrs of MBY classes
  • You can do this in a single summer, but it is not recommended, your GPA may suffer
  • If you decide to go over 2 summers, you can start at the Sea Lab the summer after you complete your Sophomore year, and finish at the Sea Lab the summer before your Senior year
  • Alternatively, you can start at the Sea Lab the summer before your Senior year, take your final classes at JSU, and then finish your degree with summer classes at the Sea Lab. This will delay your graduation until August.
  • It is strongly recommended that you have taken at least Gen Chem I&II, and at least one of the Sophomore Core (Ecology, Cell Biology, Genetics) prior to attending DISL.

Costs

  • Tuition – this is paid to JSU at the JSU tuition rate, before you start summer school
  • Registration Fee – this fee is paid directly to DISL when you register for classes
  • Activities Fee – this fee is for use of the facilities and equipment, including transportation and boat trips.  This fee is paid to DISL directly.
  • Room and Board – should you choose to live at the Sea Lab you must pay for your room and meals.  These prices vary.  They are announced in the Summer Bulletin prior to Registration.  These fees go directly to DISL.

How do I register for DISL classes?

  • It is VERY important that you register for classes properly to ensure that you get the classes that you want, and to avoid unnecessary paperwork and potential fees.
  • Fall semester before you want to attend DISL – arrange a meeting with the Liaison Officer to discuss general course offerings
  • Dec.- Jan – visit the DISL website www.disl.org and go to University Programs to find the Summer Schedule Consulting with the Liaison Officer, choose the classes that you want to take.
  • Once you have selected your classes and obtained the Liaison Officer’s signature, send your request and your registration fee to DISL
  • The deadline for priority Registration is usually sometime in Mid-February.
  • Once the deadline has passed, DISL personnel will assign  students to their classes.  Once students have been assigned to a class, they (and the Liaison Officer) will be notified.
  • In order to attend the class, students must Register (and pay) for the class at JSU, and they must be able to provide proof of registration to DISL.
